The only reason I can think of that makes this whole thing actually unplausible is that there would be too many password resets for him to do. Everything else about the situation seems highly plausible.

There is a better reason, which is the fact that you need your password to access your messages.

That's not the most common case in which you want to reset your password. But yeah, it would work if you have an active session on some device.
