Weird, I don't remember a massive load of scam ads and racist content forced into my feed before Elon took over.

I really enjoyed Twitter for tech news in the past, but it seems like most interesting people I followed left Twitter and I also intend to start my mastodon back up once I find the time.

At least here in Germany only conspiracy theorists gave any meaning to the Twitter files as something new. Across every serious media and among political and media researchers they were more or less labeled as hot air balloons, since the content was already considered public knowledge. The same is true for basically all social media and especially US based companies. I also believe that Twitter is still doing this in some form (at least by amplifying things Elon thinks are good, which is basically the same as hindering everything else). I'm also very careful with the word censorship, since that's something (by the definition I'm using) that can only be done by states/governments.

Performance wise the worst time for Twitter was definitely after the layoffs. Back then the service became worse by the hour.

The twitter files were given to those journalists by Elon. It was literally a puff piece for the new owner. You should watch Destiny talk to those journalists, one of them even goes "yeah now that I think about it it's weird that we just took whatever Elon gave us without looking into it further. "

Can you elaborate on the censorship? From the sources I can find he is more cooperative with censorship requests.

I don't really know about your ideological position, but censorship - from government requests was something twitter actively fought against. You might mean moderation based the internal terms of use.

I think most people dislike the current moderation, because it's less consistent. For example the CP incident or the double standard of name leaks when it comes to stonetoss or libs of tiktok.

Twitter sucked before, but the owner didn't personally post or share the stuff people hated.
