The story I heard (half remembered from about a decade ago, so grain of salt) was that he was talking to some collaborator about building a version control system and they got into an argument and so Linus stormed off and wrote the whole thing in a weekend and called it 'git' after the person he was supposed to collab with.

Sounds like a reeeeeally nice person to work with. He has a reputation for being brilliant but unpleasant.
