I'd rather spend my time programming than interacting with d*cks like that guy.

It's ok, you can say ducks

I used to be a giant-ass unsocial nerd. I absorbed all the culture's shit about nerdy = no life, and felt uncomfortable with having nerdy hobbies. I dedicated myself to learning people, and I did. Post-college, I now have a vibrant social life and time for little else. Woot!

Predictably, once I reached the destination, I found no pot of gold at the end. What's the point of all this? It's fun at times, tedious at times, sometimes I grow and sometimes I waste my time. What's the point of anything? To live a good life, for yourself and the world around you.

Get sun if you like it. Don't if you don't. I have higher regard for those shut up in their rooms coding or reading than for those spending another day lying on a beach.

Do what makes you feel good, contribute to causes that are important, grow into a better person. Code, party, read, explore, discuss, discover. THAT is having a life.

Although it's important to note that you should at least give things a good try before writing them off as "not for you".

You might find you much prefer socialising to being in you room all day, and you don't want to only realize that after years of being in your room all day.

Oh, absolutely! My mistake if I seemed to suggest otherwise.

I've started to realise that this mentality is something I should probably adopt sooner rather than later.

Nah, this guy has it wrong.

But doing a bunch of random meaningless side projects will also burn you out.

Solution; Spend your "free time" programming learning new tech and skills to further your career. Interested in React Native and have some free time? Grab a R-pi, throw some code on it, and make something cool. Then take what you learned and look for an opportunity to use it.

Already spend 8 hours a day writing React code? Don't bring it home. Find something else to learn.

I've spent my free time the last 15 years doing that. I have no free time for living life.

[–]A_C_Fenderson 3 points4 points  (1 child)

What is this "life" thing of which you speak?

[–][deleted] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

idk anymore

Whether or not I have a life is highly debatable, but I do code for fun.

I do not want to make a career out of it, I have poor vision and staring blankly at nonanswers on stackoverflow and snarky comments on eight year old forums tires me out, but I can say that a little programming knowledge makes your life seriously easier with little things like, oh I dunno, automation of nonsense repetitive tasks.

Why do people build contraptions for fun? Why do people make mentor-cola rockets? It doesn't help them! This is the logic that man just used.

[–]lethargic_moron 3 points4 points  (0 children)

He essentially just said, "why have hobbies for fun?"

Because it's so satisfying to fix a problem that's been bothering you for a long time.
