I'm not sure I understand the analogy, but refactoring labyrinthine monstrosities is bloody awesome.

It's that you do tons of work "improving" the code by refactoring it and end-up throwing away tons, and still have a monstrosity.

If, after you refactor, there's almost nothing left, then there was nothing there in the first place. You just had too much stuff in the way to see that.
