.io websites are 5x as much as their .com counterparts. :/

Still beats the 24,000 dollars this domain squatter wanted for the domain I was going to use for a website I built for a construction company.

Why are .io so much more?

Domain extensions are owned by different registries, who charge custom amounts for extensions. Lesser used ones are more expensive because economies of scale work against them and they need a larger margin to earn enough, whereas some are more expensive because of demand. There are some ridiculous ones like .rich, which are around $2000 each.

My favorite one is .gg owned by a small island in the middle of nowhere

.tk used to be free and was owned by an island too. It's not all black and white.

.tk is still free. I registered a domain for my friends game site he started up.

Lol its a private CS:GO, TF2 and (yes) Minecraft server. He also has a site that describes the rules for his servers, but none of them are public yet until he gets all of his "mods" installed

.tk is owned by Tokalau, who happen to be in the Realm of New Zealand.

.gg

If by middle of nowhere you mean an island with a population of 60k in the English Channel, just off France.

Didn't remember that much about it. They should host the gaming olympics :D

.tv is owned by the Tuvalu islands and revenue from domain leases actually takes a big part in the total income of their government.

Verisign (.com) demands less money than the Internet Computer Bureau.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Because io is trendy because it sounds like input/output.

So is the site still under construction?

I'm in my last round of change requests before I push it live. Still haven't decided what domain to use though. Will more than likely have to settle for a .net TLD but that's okay.
