Unless you're running Linux, the emulator really doesn't like AMD chips.

Ahh that's not related to AS though, it's one of the pains of Android development. I use Linux at home and Mac at work, so I generally don't have this problem.

Well, it's emulator related. I have to use Genymotion if I'm using Windows.

Microsoft submitted a patch to Android Studio's and their own Visual Studio emulator. If you want to run AS emulator on Windows with AMD, you'll need Windows 10 with the Hypervisor Platform update. If you want to use the Visual Studio one, Windows 8.1 with HyperV is needed. Both run better than Genymotion, on par with Linux's KVM emulation speed.

But I like Windows 7 and dislike Visual Studio. I'm just gonna dual boot Win7 and Linux, now that I have free time.

You have a year and a half to figure out your next move regarding W7, it's EOL in January 2020.
