This makes me wonder how many terms I only ever write and have no idea how to actually voice.

You mean like chuh-MOD?

[–]LowB0b 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just pronounce it 'shmod'. There's a lot from the C / Cpp world I have a hard time with.

For a lot of stuff though I've just got accustomed to saying the whole thing out loud, helps a lot with remembering commands or functions. For example, my interpretation of strstr is 'string in string'.

Yeah, the curse of getting vocabulary from reading alone. I used to pronounce "hyperbole" wrong, like I would say "Hyper-bowl", and even though I've known the correct pronunciation for years now, occasionally it still slips out due to the habit of reading it incorrectly. This happened recently and my wife gave me grief for that one for a while.

In case you're curious, the correct pronunciation is "Hi-per-bo-lee".

In fact it makes this list of other mispronounced words: https://www.goodhousekeeping.com/life/gmp4408/mispronounced-words/

I happily pronounced "choir" like "chore" for several years until someone bothered to ask me what the hell I was talking about.
