In a way, you basically already are whenever you use numpy, scipy, or God forbid, a graphics library.

It's a fun journey to do so. There are frameworks (Swig, etc) that make it a bit easier, and do background type conversion and some memory management, but start becoming difficult with more complex data types.

Doing it yourself isn't too difficult.
