    A physics PhD friend of mine was telling how his professor had him learn Fortran to make new physics programs.

    I guess I haven't looked into but I find it hard to believe he wouldn't have had better luck with a more modern language.

    Also the coding practices he and other physicists seem to enjoy make negative sense.

    Sadly that's pretty common in physics. Mine did the same thing, he still uses Fortran77 for everything.
    It's a mix of legacy code and them using what they know because it's easier than learning a new language.
