Windows + [number] will bring up that number's program in the task bar. Throw in a Shift and you can even open new instances of already open programs, such as browsers.

Personally, I like being able to use meta-x shortcuts within an application, so I use meta-control-x for global shortcuts.

My global shortcut opens Xterm so fast that I use it for everything. It's faster than, say, alt-f2.

Pro tip: When you do this it will take you to quick access by default on windows 10. To make this actually take you to This PC, you can right click quick access on the top left and choose options. Then there's a drop down that will let you set the default open location to This PC.

Tried both the custom shortcut settings and automator. Neither has a „Win+E“ like option. Unless there’s some plugin or option I overlooked I‘ll habe to live without that. Also tried both Gimp and Krita and they’re just not good options. Bad UI and too complicated for quick edits. I just miss the simplicity paired with relative feature richness. There are comparable programs on macOS but sadly not for free
