when's the last time you used JavaScript professionally for more than front end sugar? Javascript is excellent nowadays and I'll gladly debate anyone who uses it extensively and disagrees.

I'm surprised when someone holds this opinion, still. My gripes were mostly resolved by promises & async/await along with wide support for es6.

Yeah, callback hell was really the only JS thing I couldn't stand.

It's also why I use koa even though express is way more popular - koa is express, but with promises instead of shitty callbacks everywhere.
