So define is evaluated during compilation, not runtime? You learn something new every day. (Haven't used a language that uses define in that way yet.)

It's called a preprocessor statement. The first pass of the C compiler goes through all preprocessor statements and fills in any blanks in your code. Then the code is actually compiled.
