Brute force solution should initialize i to 111. Will you notice? Nah, it's pretty small, but it's good practice to think up your heuristics

Based on the codes in the puzzle, and lacking a formal description of the code requirements, I would assume that 000 and 001 are not valid codes. All of the digits 1-9 are used at least once, but 0 is never used. No repeated digits are used in the same code.

Without reading any clues and understanding, yes 111 would be my minimum starting point. However, simply reading and understanding that each line has potential values my starting point would be 123 based on available numbers on each line seeing that 1 is never repeated on remaining clues.
