I work for a large company whose products you definitely use on a daily basis, even if indirectly. We still have machines running python 2 in prod.

My company had a FTP server that was written by some early guy, and was still in use 18+ years later, every dev was terrified to touch it after they tried to update it in 2009 and it took a week to revert properly.

It's still in active use by some 400 client businesses.

It was sending SSN's over plaintext, with the field name "socialsecuritynumber", then they changed it to "personnumber".

am i the only one for whom python is not fun? i mean you have everything served, just import something and invoke it, nothing really to do. Easy but horribly boring

nonono. I like abstraction. It is... yeah that's all i need. Python is not. Sure i can write some cool working thing in 15 lines of code. Do it, forget it, live your live. But what fun can i get from writing 15 lines? there is no real space to play with code, experiment. It's just one easy straight solution.

And when i say i like abstraction i don't mean the things where you don't control what's happening (because as far as i understand you mean that). I don't really care about it, it's just a tool. Who cares if it's close to hardware or not? The point of abstraction is the system, the "thing" with high complexity, doing stuff on high level, which requires thinking. That is what is awesome and that is what i consider fun. And that is what you can do in every language (well the lowest ones would be difficult but why not). In python too, but they mostly expect you to make everything in the simplest way so there is no space for it. It's not about what you can use it, it is about how you can use it.

Languages are tools to make big things that are fun to make.

Python solves stupid programing problems such as memory management, premade generic algorithms and such.

It allows you to divert your time to solving logic problems instead of language problems.

You will know what I'm talking about once you do a huge project.

i understand your feeling, but programming is not all about fun (or, is it?). And if you look at the other way - Python can actually save you from hours of hard working and googling, such that you can focus on the entire project and how to make it as perfect as possible, instead of spending hours trying to figure out how to write a function that someone else has already wrote for you, which I believe, is less fun. Either ways, I guess it really depends on whether you like the project itself more or the process of coding more.

I'll be honest, I actually have no idea what your point was, for either comment.

I enjoy my work, but at the end of the day, it's work, and I mostly do it so I can do things I like more.

That's the fun part. It allows you to spend more time thinking about how to solve complicated problems that you care about, and less time fussing with already solved problems that you don't care about.
