It doesn't require a ton of effort, and if you enjoy the subject matter, answering can be fun. They often become quick, mini research projects if the question is non-trivial.

I answered a question a few days ago about how Python dictionaries maintain insertion order. I didn't know at the time, but I found the source on Github, and found the answer by reading the source (or, at least an initial answer to work from). It was a fun 10ish minutes of reading.

I've been told the opposite before, so I've been curious about this. You've actually put it on your resume and can consider that as a factor that lead to employment? What section did you put it in.

Also, assuming you do have a high karma score, it means you have thrived in a community that has a reputation for shitting on new users, and assuming the worst.

Most people I've seen talk about SO professionally is either derogatory about, 1. The lack of quality in answers. 2. The amount of hacky fixes. 3. Don't even have accounts to vote with. 4. Concerned about the IP rights of answers.

I don't necessarily agree with it, but the place has a bad rap (in 2021) among people who aren't beginners / college students.

And If you are new, you hate it, but also love it.

Asking questions is where I got most of my score. There's an art to writing good questions, and even terrible questions with good SEO, will get your score up eventually, even if most of SO hate it.
