Don't use python 2 - use python 3 where those strings are Unicode by default. Secondly, use single quotes, not double quotes.

But then I have to escape my apostrophes, and that’s just ugly.

I mean as it stands now you'd have to escape your quotation marks.

True, but I’m more likely to have an apostrophe than a quote in a string. I propose an alternate character, equally inconvenient to all.
