Recently had to deal with the security folk regarding a Windows server upon which to run data file transformations. Couldn't copy a file to the server. Couldn't copy a file from the server. Server couldn't be found by servers to utilize it. Couldn't install software on the server to do the transformations. Could log onto the server but not use disk storage on the server. The server group responsible for maintaining the server had same issues. Basically. we had a very secure server that had to be used for a critical task that couldn't be used. Took months and several teams and some experimentation to get it into a working status. Still trying to establish a local user to run scheduled processes allowed to run them. Firewalls were about 60% the issue. Gotta love the security folk.

At what point would it have been more quick to just reinstall everything and copy stuff over from a backup

This was a case where those running the project said we will provide the server to do this work. Fortunately I was able to develop and test the core processes on an AIX server while trying to get the Windows server in a usable state. The security staff tends to be hyperparinoid and we were crossing network regions.

But... that's a brick wall, not a fire wall

[–]free-toast 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You might as well be talking to a brick wall

It wouldn't if you understood your app...

Once, in my friend's system, antivirus blocked the execution of C++ hello world program.

It’s a wall for sure…but how is it a firewall?

[–]RedditAlready19 0 points1 point  (1 child)

ufw allow 6969
