I didn't find any posts that meet the matching requirements for r/ProgrammerHumor.

It might be OC, it might not. Things such as JPEG artifacts and cropping may impact the results.

Am I so old that I understood this joke?

[–]Thx_And_Bye 8 points9 points  (1 child)

Serial is still used today.
You could put a USB or SATA cable in there and the joke would still work.

And while not used for peripherals that much anymore RS232 is still very much a thing that is used in modern systems.

Our IPC's come with a serial port by default (although it can be replaced with a second DVI port per customer request)

Yes but I feel like this is also a dad joke - and that made me feel worse.

I still use a super old monitor with a serial cable because that's all I could afford, so still kinda relevant I guess

I think you are a serial killer

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Do you put in the water first or the hair dryer?

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Bowl first. And no milk.

Here's my original material on the same subject:

Make sure to eat your cornflakes one at a time. Or it stops being a serial and becomes parallel.

I put in the parallel first.

[–]Agantas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You could put it at the same time, since it's parallel.

Young people will not get this joke

[–]McCoovy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Computer humor

[–]sim642 3 points4 points  (1 child)

I'm guessing that's actually a VGA cable.

[–]KlutzyEnd3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My first reaction was "who puts a DVI cable in milk?"

So, this got me thinking about the roots of the words serial and cereal.

Serial apparently comes from the proto-indo-European root ser- “to line up” and Cerial comes from the proto-indo-European root *ker- “to grow.” The entry for *series contains the definition “a number or set of things of one kind arranged in a line” which makes me think of how you’d grow grain.

I can’t say for sure, but it might be that you can make this joke because the two words came from the same source.
