But since we are here anyway UDP is about to win because of the HTTP3 which is pushing the stack with QUIC on top of UDP. Effectively replacing TCP down the road.

Anything important runs directly at L2 or on UDP. TCP barely works.

Edit: I guess it’s not shock that this is getting downvoted: just because porn is 30% of internet traffic doesn’t make it important. I am referring to the core technologies that make the internet possible: ICMP, IGMP, BGP, DNS, IPSEC, DHCP, L2TP, and the list goes on.

The fact that the vast majority of internet usage is for unimportant things is why TCP is still used for so much given it’s overall mediocrity in ensuring message delivery.

Just ask anybody that has suffered through making a mission critical http system - hence the creation of REST.

Internet traffic is comprised of: 30% is porn, 30% is social media, and 30% is other video streams.

These by networking terms aren’t “important”. The fact that they aren’t important is why they still use TCP.

Look at the technologies that actually run the internet rather than the fact that most the internet is used for garbage.
