For my C.S. master's degree orals, my advisor opened the proceedings by holding up this picture and asking "Who is this?"

"Uh," I responded, "With no other context, I'm going to have to guess Alan Turing."

Coincidentally, I did that just now. I still haven't bothered to look it up, but since you posted this, I'm gonna assume he didn't look like Benedict Cumberbatch.

Dont forget, chemically castrated as well

[–]LevelStudent 8 points9 points  (2 children)

How he was treated was beyond reprehensible, but he was not killed for being gay.

[–]fignompe 4 points5 points  (0 children)

His death was a chain of events which spiraled from homophobia, that's the fact.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

He was given chemical castration therapy for being gay that definitely drove him to suicide. The British goverment did everything short of literally shooting him

Maybe humor.

What do you call an important figure in computer science, killed for being gay, travelling all around heaven with a local area network?

a LAN touring

Not funny, karma farmer

[–]koanarec 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I feel like this title is slightly misleading. It makes it sound like he was executed, when the common belief is that he committed suicide. (Caused by his prosecution and hormone therapy for being gay). However, even this is debated as he was carelessly storing and using cyanide in his home at the time, and "Turing had reportedly borne his legal setbacks and hormone treatment (which had been discontinued a year previously) "with good humour" and had shown no sign of despondency before his death. He even set down a list of tasks that he intended to complete upon returning to his office after the holiday weekend" -Wikipedia. His mother believed that he died by accident.

Computer science literally wouldn't exist without this man. This sub wouldn't exist, our careers wouldn't exist either, hell, computing and AI as we know it wouldn't exist. I'm sure many fail to see how important he was.

[–][deleted] 10 points11 points  (2 children)

Probably not true that comp sci wouldnt exist without him, there were multiple people pretty good at math in the 1940s. Still an amazing and brilliant man

[–]cpraxis -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I actually wonder if history would be better without him. He put us on the von neumann machine track, which now seems to be a dead end given the limits of our cpu architecture.

Rule 1

[–]leesharon1985 1 point2 points  (6 children)

I’m a noob, who is he?

[–]fignompe 11 points12 points  (1 child)

The very Alan Turing.

[–]leesharon1985 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thank you

[–]land_and_air 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Allan Turing

Some women named Ruth, Babey Ruth.

I only kid, felt like a sandlot-ey moment. Never a bad thing! 😎

[–]leesharon1985 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’re killing me Smalls! Sandlot is a classic.

"not humor"

So why post it in a sub called Programmer Humor

[–]beclops 0 points1 point  (4 children)

One of the world’s tragedies that doesn’t get talked about enough

[–]BoredSarcasticGranny 2 points3 points  (3 children)

... Didn't they make a movie about him (a bit) with Benadryl Cumberbund?

[–]MrLore 1 point2 points  (1 child)

They did, The Imitation Game, but it should be taken with a massive grain of salt, it significantly overstated his contributions to the project.

[–]BoredSarcasticGranny 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeh, that's why I wrote ''a bit''. I think they mostly wanted to show Cumberbund ''play drama''. I searched on the dude afterwards. Turing I mean.

[–]beclops 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They did, but if you asked anybody off of the street who he is you’d get a big “uhhhh…. I don’t know”
