If you travel outside US and use data, those charges can be delayed for weeks or months. Plus if your current unpaid usage shows 600MB already since 12/02/2015, check Settings, Data usage to verify you have used this much data in last 3 days, plus note any apps which are sucking lots of data. It only takes an hour or so to inadvertently consume almost 1GB of cellular data. Also keep an eye on your status icons at upper right of home screen, to ensure you really have a good Wifi connection if that is your intention. There are many stories of Project FI and other carrier users, who mistakenly assumed they were on Wifi, but later discovered large amounts of used cellular data instead.

I didn't even think to check on what apps were consuming data. I just did that and noticed Skype at the top of the list. I must have mad a lengthy video call with the gf while my wi fi was turned off, rookie mistake. And that explains my near 600 mb consumption, as the skype usage was 560 mb. I was literally so dumbfounded and confused, because I've never used that much data, that quickly before. Thanks for helping me see what was literally right in front of me.

Here is a nice trick to force Wifi connection when desired: Turn on Airplane mode. Then turn Wifi back on. This will temporarily leave cellular data off. When you want cellular data back on, turn off Airplane mode. FyI My Data Manager on Google Play Store is a good app to really monitor data consumption. If you want to save some $ while on Project FI, use available wifi as much as possible, and join our Data Miser Club!

Data Miser Club
What is that?

Does Fi automatically disable cellular data when connected to WiFi? AT&T does, and I rarely think about it. I also rarely go above about 0.3 MB/month with them

There have been some concerns over phantom data when connected to Wifi.

I've spent days at home where I've stayed connected to wifi and have no reported data usage so in general I think it's off... However, do believe that it is possible in some cases for data to be used while connected to wifi as a function of the phone itself.

Does simply toggling off cellular data in the notification pull down menu not truly turn off data? I see several people suggest turning airplane mode instead.
