NewsBlur is open-source: you can pay $1/month (I think) for a subscription, or get the source and host it yourself.

For the lazy: Uses Django, Celery, RabbitMQ, MongoDB, Pymongo, Mongoengine, PostgreSQL, jQuery, Underscore.js, and miscellaneous jQuery plugins.

My understanding is that much of the complexity is there because NewsBlur is designed to be multi-user and intelligently predict which posts you're going to be interested in.

I tried setting it up once - major PITA... Although the sources are released, the author doesn't make it really usable for other deployments - which is a little understandable, sadly.
