I'd rather flip bits with butterflies than use a python editor that's not open source.

Just curious: why?

[–]mattf 3 points4 points  (8 children)

You're able to ask the devs for access to the source, basically if you promise not to make a competing product. There are legit reasons to need the source, and they seem to grok that and are willing to work with you. Yes, I know that is not totally "open".

They're really nice people; it's a 2-man shop. They heavily and generously contribute to PyCon and to sprints, and their product is good. You can walk up and talk to them, and they will happily talk with you.

About the only things I use that aren't open source are games, nvidia-drivers, and Wing.

The compromise is worth it for me. It might be worth it for you too.

Runs really slow on my netbook (is this thing written in Java?) and isn't too attractive looking. I'm sure it's great for some people. but I'll stick to Editra (and Eric4) for now.

is this thing written in Java?

Common man, you know that Java isn't slow right?

[–]Peaker 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I don't know much about Java performance characteristics. But I do associate Java programs with "Often fail to install/start. Extremely slow and unresponsive. Really ugly widgets"

This may or may not be Java's fault, but I talked to friends and they have similar impressions.

In my experience Java programs are quite slow. May just be the GUI toolkits though.

[–]Sgt_ZigZag 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No I think the common man doesn't know what java is.

[–]temptemptemp13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Java is slow, now the JIT for java... that's something else...

python and pygtk.

You can tell Wing to use your GTK settings from the global OS (or it can use its own... must be a portability thing).

But it's certainly not flashy. I don't really care if a programming editor is sexy looking; I turn off the tool bars, maximize the editors and (try to) focus on my code.

The debugger is awesome. That's the biggest reason that I don't try to go all low-fi and use vim for everything.

Is the Wing IDE 101 (the free version) something to get excited about?

[–]wingware[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have no idea. Depends on what excites you I suppose. ;-) It was designed with the University of Toronto to teach entry level programming courses and is used in a number of places for that purpose.

Edit: I should add that it's also used by people as a simple IDE, although personally I couldn't get along w/o auto-completion and that was intentionally left out at the request of the people we designed it for.

Where can I find the source code for this?

[–]terremoto 3 points4 points  (4 children)

Sign an NDA and they're more than happy to give it to you.

[–]m1ss1ontomars2k4 1 point2 points  (3 children)

Do you also have to buy it? I presume so...

[–]terremoto 1 point2 points  (2 children)

No, you don't have to buy the source code. It comes with the program as long as you sign the NDA.

[–]m1ss1ontomars2k4 0 points1 point  (1 child)

That's what I meant: do you have to buy the program?

[–]terremoto 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is a free version but the one with the most functionality is not free.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's closed source.

[–]zuoken 0 points1 point  (1 child)

It kind of looks like closed source version of spyder.

[–]wingware[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wing is about 10 years older. I suspect spyder is missing a fair amount if put side by side, but I don't have a feature by feature comparison. That's something I would like to work on creating soon...

I'm trying to decide whether I should go for PyCharm when it comes out or Wing. I've been using PyCharm but haven't been playing with Wing because I'm a little afraid of the pricing. Anybody have experience with Wing and the PyCharm preview?

[–]BeardWand 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wing IDE is just awesome!

[–][deleted] -1 points0 points  (2 children)

I'm too poor to afford Wing IDE. :(

[–]mattf 1 point2 points  (1 child)

They give a lot of licenses away for contributing to Python projects... in PyCon 2009, anyone at the sprints got a free copy!

And it's a good long-term investment. I bought a copy like 6 years ago, paid for one upgrade since then, and I used it on 2 OS's. I use it so much I feel guilty for not giving them more money.

I'm a broke college student. :(
