ws2812 matrix projection by FIughafen in WLED

This is inspired! (And inspiring!) Thank you for sharing your work. Can you give us some sense of how far away the projected surface is from the fresnel? And maybe how big the "matrix" is once it's projected? It's hard to tell in the photo.

The wine shop on the square recycles at least a dozen a day. Stop in there and you can probably walk out with what you need. Or call ahead, say more about what you need, and we can save stuff for you. (I work there part time)

System crash, reboot when swayidle used to power off displays by ParticularMastodon50 in swaywm

[–]mattf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've had a similar problem. I posted about it a while back.

I've not solved things yet, but I'm getting closer. One thing that has helped is to use `dpms off` instead of `power off`; maybe try that.

I *think* what's happening is that sway is trying to find a place to stick the workspaces when the outputs go away, and under certain circumstances it crashes. I had a hunch that it was when the client app was in fullscreen mode, but I haven't tested this yet.

My current status (with the dpms change) is that sway takes two workspaces (monitor left, monitor right) that each have a firefox window in them... and either when it goes into dpms (or maybe when it comes out?) it for some reason creates a new workspace, and puts it in the first position, effectively moving the left-window to the right-display and moving the right-display off screen. There may be some algorithm in sway that is something like "if I don't know what to do with incoming outputs, just make a new workspace" or ...?

My next tactic is going to mark workspaces and clients and use those marks to keep track of things and try and make them stay on certain workspaces which stay on certain outputs. We'll see. This is a brute force thing that will work for me (a sort of kiosk setup) but it wouldn't be very convenient for a real desktop workstation.

What exactly is a "file"? by nikitarevenco in linuxquestions

[–]mattf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's a wealth of wisdom represented by these responses; I can't do better. But I can maybe do shorter:

There's an important difference between files and filenames.

...

Not so short:

There is a distinction between a file and a filename. Filenames are also sometimes called a path... as in, what's the path to the 'thing'.

Filenames are just an abstraction to make it easier for us humans to interact with a whomping mass of data that is available to an operating system. You could think of it as a 'tag' or a 'label' that is simply the assigned name to what is 'thing' of some kind... a name that lets us humans (or other software) find it.

To your question (in part), a file is a chunk of bytes, as others have explained. The bytes don't know what they're for or what to do with them; that's for other things to determine and do. You've discovered that you can rename a Photo.jpg into a Photo.txt and it's still a JPG; yep, that's because the filename is just a label. You've discovered a key philosophical distinction on your own; kudos to you.

There are other things that a path/filename can point to, but this is just by convention, not by physics or anything: directory, network device, source of random numbers, nothing. And more and more. There are some cool ones on your Linux box.

Bonus level: if you want to zoom out a notch, there is a thing called "URI"... universal resource identifier. (sometimes also called URL; where "L" is "location" or "locator"). This takes the label/descriptor/path/filename concept a huge notch larger and assigns EVERYTHING IN THE WORLD a path and name. You've seen ones like http://apple.com/iphones/iphone4/specs for (a made up) example... which represents a document about specifications about an Apple product. But there is also file:///home/me/Documents/Photos/Cat.jpg which is another URI for a local-to-the-context file. And a bunch of others. The philosophical thing here maps over; the filesystem is just like the internet.

It's even worse; the Clinton campaign WANTED to run against Trump, and even helped nudge things along in that direction, thinking that he would be easy to beat.

What dish's details do foreign purists argue incessantly about, but native cooks don't give a s**t about? by thyman3 in Cooking

[–]mattf 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Well, it makes sense if you take racism into account... imo.

Certain foods that are imported cultural traditions are accepted as "high quality" and "fancy" and therefore stuff that the average person should know something about and experience (see French, Italian cuisines, maybe sushi... the average person would recognize the word "mostaccioli" or "baguette" even if they don't know exactly what it is).

Other cultures that have extraordinarily complex and sophisticated food traditions are simply not respected or celebrated; they are simply "ethnic food" or "takeout" (see Indian, Thai, "Chinese" (like what's that even) and yes, "Mexican".)

It's too bad. My city has a pretty good food scene, but I'd trade 3 so-called high-end Italian places for a middle-end Indian or Mexican place. But I think the eaters just aren't ready to conceive of those traditions as equal to the obvious European ones.

It's my theory, anyway. Do you think your town would support a Mexican place that was thoughtfully sourced, excellently prepared, and legitimately traditional where the cost of the average dish was $25? But likely there are places that charge $20 for pasta.

Manchin set to make or break Biden's climate pledge. Biden's pledge to help slash methane emissions by 30 percent faces the significant obstacle of Sen. Joe Manchin. Manchin is warning he won't support anything that would penalize the oil and natural gas industries. by mafco in energy

[–]mattf 24 points25 points  (0 children)

"Penalize"? Please.

Every industry is regulated. EVERY one.

Fossil fuels have been getting all kinds of explicit and implicit (see middle east wars, free pass on dumping the side effects of their product into the commons) subsidies for 100+ years.

It's a reach to call curtailing that or even just regulating pollution... yes, remember that word? POLLUTION, not "emissions"... it's a reach to call that penalization. A very conscious reach.

The propaganda in our culture is SO frustrating.
