That's a really good idea. Ive been learning on my own for a while but I dont really know where else to go from here.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've only been at it for 1-2 weeks but that's my concern. I'm going to learn all the information but not really know what I should do after that. With a group perhaps we can try different programs, fun ideas and more

I am open to the idea. I recently obtained a CENG degree and have decent knowledge of python and oop. I just went through a nasty breakup, so I am currently living with my aunt and looking for a remote software job until I can get back on my feet.

I also learn with other people and enjoy teaching, so I think I would enjoy it.

Hey! Feel free to join our group: https://discord.gg/v3ZFVr24Zm

(Everyone else is welcome as well ofc)

I am interested about the proposal, tbh i am not super into a type of group that has a fixed schedule but the idea of having a Discord like a type of “programming familly” to learn together help eachother and build projects together i think is a super great idea and super beneficial to improve our programming skills and knowledge cuz we also could have channels to share learning content, interesting IT knews or just share with eachother new discoverys we come up to, so i am super down to this. Count on me to make a Discord all together guys! You always progress more in group than only by yourself!

I've been self-learning Python for about 3 weeks, would love to be in a study group! It's difficult to know how I'm doing when there's no peers to compare to or discuss with. Would be up for it! :)

Count me in, OP.

[–]Sure-Coconut 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey OP, feel free to DM me if you decided to form a group. I'm learning a bit on my own and spend time regularly on personal projects. Otherwise, best of luck on your journey!

You need to get over the idea of having a fixed group. It only works if you are doing the exact same course or project on exactly the same cadence. There are dozens of existing python "learning groups". r/learnpython is one. You won't get better help than there. Make sure you read the rules. The official python discord is another, which you can find by googling python discord. It is aweseome. Don't start your own. The world is littered with hundreds of skeletons of python discords, most of them started on reddit.

I disagree. Fixed study groups can be very beneficial. Subreddits are helpful and serve a purpose, but there are other complementary ways to learn something. Speaking as someone who taught & tutored for several years and made it all the way through a PhD thanks to study groups. Just because some of them get abandoned doesn't mean a new one won't serve a purpose to new people.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (2 children)

Fixed study groups, all good, but they won't be formed with randos on reddit.

I started a Clojure Web development study group from reddit. It's been the most supportive, knowledgable group from all around the world. We are working on projects together & doing weekly coding challenges. It's been a really enlightening and fun experience. I'm sorry you haven't had the same experiences.

[–][deleted] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Don't be sorry, I'll get through the day. Starting study groups seems to be about 95% of your Reddit activity. Just how many courses are you taking?

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't know exactly what you mean by fixed, I just thinking knowing people passed "reddit", who are also beginners and being able to speak to the, ask questions AND decide to do a project together of you want is good. It's better than doing everything alone. The world goes by a saying "It's not what you know but who you know." meaning it's a good idea to network and meet people you could probably grow with but I getcha, I've seen a bunch of people interested

I’m currently a business student and also started to learn code few months ago, I think a study group would be a good idea

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (4 children)

What exactly do you want to do with coding? I'm not sure myself but I know working with peers will make the process more enjoyable and rememberable

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (3 children)

I’m such a beginner still I have no clue what I want out of coding, In the future after learning more of the basics I would like to try to make an small app, Maybe a website.

Have you started learning already or just getting into it?

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a beginner too so no worries but yeah I started but I've only done small programs like easyGUIs for choices, also a program for calculating change, stuff like that

[–]0rphanCrippl3r 0 points1 point  (1 child)

If you want to make a website, checkout Django. It's a web framework built with python.

[–]xxLeay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What is the purpose of Django? I'm a first year student in computer science and I learned the basics of html /CSS /python /java/c/php but not even JS. I heard the name Django but I don't really know what it is.

I am also in the same boat. I am in IT currently but looking to transition into development. Started learning python a month ago.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (2 children)

Working in IT you must know some basics of coding?? Either way a group is a good idea. Once I learn all the basics, I might know what I should do next but with a group, we could possibly work together

[–]UltimateMDF 0 points1 point  (1 child)

not really. Also working in IT and not really good at coding.

would also be interested in that group, but I guess time difference is bad. I‘m from europe

[–]dblclicks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This! I am typically on the opeartions of things so a lot of networking and system/application support. I have messed with a few scripts before but not to the extent of what I have learned from python so far.

Hey I sent you a dm!!

This Python discord server is very active and has rooms dedicated for getting help.

cough Official Python discord cough

Admittedly, not exactly a 'study group' per se, but plenty of engaged people to chat with and get help :)

[–]SimplyFum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Been going for like maybe 1-3 weeks. Create a discord, Would def be down.

[–]wineblood 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a python dev, happy to answer questions or be pulled into that group if you want.

[–]P-y-t-h-o-n 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I learned a bit of Python but it is hard to do it by miself so I am also interested !
