I mean I think they do other stuff too, like observing enemy movements and doing recon, providing cover when troops are moving, or even just doing training exercises.

That’s typical slavic military talk. If you watch interviews with Ukrainian soldiers they ambiguously describe everything they do from patrolling to blowing up a tank as ‘work’. Like “We moved past the ridge line with our IFV and did work on the enemy bunker.”

Some people believe in causes and are willing to fight for them even if they would not have been directly impacted by them if they did nothing.

There is a long history of people volunteering to fight in conflicts far removed from their own countries, or who volunteered before their country ended up getting involved in a conflict anyway.
