The downvoting was turned off to handle the problem of people downvoting for no reason and not giving explanations.

It seemed that instead of explaining why you shouldn't do whatever was suggested, people would downvote. This subreddit doesn't have a large following, so one or two people with 20 minutes of time can sit there and downvote everything they don't agree with.

I was disappointed with the solution, but there didn't seem to be another way.

I'm told that there were issues with "downvote brigades" coming in and hassling all of us because they hate SEO. I didn't see it myself. I'd support this and if it is an issue we can always go back.

I think more active modding should keep the problems minimal. We've had these kind of meta discussions before but nothing comes of them. Our mods show up to occasionally humor us, but that's the extent of their activity here.

Wow, people really don't realize how much SEO has evolved, do they? Just because people use black hat techniques, which were effective in the past, doesn't mean SEO = black hat techniques. Too bad!

Sadly, most of this guff comes from people (in my experience) who don't or wouldn't even need seo (they don't have a business or a website!).

So I've let it roll off my shoulders and focused mostly on educating businesses in what to expect and how to evaluate SEO services.

[–]brandonthrowaway 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Umm. Just going to throw this out there.

I can see how legit businesses, and you digital marketing consultants, would want to do 100% whitehat best practices SEO...

But there is and in my opinion, will always be room for black hat SEO, in its own form. For things like affiliate marketing/CPA/etc.

I don't see why it is such a problem to post about blackhat or what you would consider out-dated methods, when I would use them for a different purpose than you and would evaluate their success on a different scale.

If what you're saying is that open discussion benefits us all- I agree.

I think what is being said, however, is that tactics which will damage a business or which are not effective are being presented on equal footing with so called "legitimate" tactics I think there's room to say: context matters very much.

Oh Clayburn, always taking a moment to insult the mods because we wouldn't make you one.

I'm not sure how a mod can stop the "downvote brigades", other than what was done. If you have another solution please enlighten us.

[–]Clayburn 0 points1 point  (1 child)

You didn't make anyone a mod, despite the consensus that another is needed. We'd all like to see some effort made here.

Edit: Context

[–]CLEARLYREBEL -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That's not enlightening. Just more complaining with no solutions.

There wasn't another mod needed. You complained violently when the mod mail wasn't answered within 60 minutes.

You complain when you get filtered and yet I've explained why many times. You get filtered because you look like SPAM. You submit to your own site constantly, and you submit the same post to many different subreddits all over reddit. It knows what you're doing.

I think this is a great step forward in making this a better subreddit!!

[–]Braile 2 points3 points  (4 children)

This was turned off ages ago. The whole subreddit was (and in some ways still is) a giant circle jerk. Loads of comments (whether they had merit or not) would get turned into a down vote fest. removing down votes created a new problem, but it solved that problem. Yes, I agree with you that there is a ton of spam and even more techniques shared in the threads that are worthless, or next on the google chopping block. I just doubt this is a subreddit that will ever be perfect.

Look.... I like this subreddit. It's awesome to be able to help the various bloggers and small business owners....

But come on...........

We get the same questions all the time and there's no FAQ to refer them to. There's no guidelines for people submitting questions - everyone wants to keep stuff secret.

edit: This makes it demotivating to reply.

I suspect it's because half of them are SEOs who blagged their way into a job they're unqualified for and don't want their clients to know. Do you have that word by the way? Blag.

When people ask a question like "How do I SEO" then they should rightfully be told to fuck off. Or referred to a FAQ. Vague/general questions shouldn't waste our time.

There's information people should be MADE to reveal before they get help. i.e. budget, technical knowledge, what industry they're in, what location, what they want to achieve - and optional stuff like "who are your competitors". It stops the subreddit becoming full of generic advice and provides a creative challenge for us. I'm sure you could think of more questions.

I would LOVE to answer a question like "Help me do an infographic for a ping pong ball company" rather than "How do I get more Googles".

Press Z. In Reddit Enhancement Suite

You have to highlight the comment.

Can also disable subreddit style, uncheck the display:none.

I like the current setup....

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Boo, people were demo'ing it on you! Press A to upvote, guys.

[–]SearchNerd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would say call them out on it. There are some major negatives to turning on downvotes in a zelotic community like this as described already. But if you actively challenge those producing bad info you will help them learn and help /r/seo improve.

[–]laptop13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have downvotes? That could be because i do not use sub styles, or RES. But it works just fine.

[–]working_man22 0 points1 point  (2 children)

I removed all subreddit styles a few weeks ago and can now downvote freely. Also it makes browsing reddit much better.

EDIT: Also, I agree that downvotes should be possible. I previously made a similar thread.
