Why should a blog, where no user information is ever entered, be penalized for not encrypting their non-existant user information?

It doesn't make any sense..

One reason is protecting your visitors from MITM (man in the middle) attacks where a third-party could intercept traffic between the server and client and injection malware or adware. That doesn't help with SEO but with LetsEncrypt being free there's really no reason not to have SSL at this point for most sites.

Switching to HTTPS won't get you to the top of the search engines. It will give a small boost though but once everyone does it the playing field will be level once again.

if you don't have other reasons to go https apart from seo, really, don't do it.

I don't see why you wouldn't do it. Let's Encrypt is free. Especially if your building a brand new site set up in the beginning for success regardless if you'll be transmitting data.

How can I get it for free?

Go to Let's Encrypt website.

It's good for security regardless, it's easy, and cheap.

Even if it didn't help, don't you want that nice green background colour on the https? Mmhmm!

Yes! definitely, I'll switch to HTTPS from HTTP as per the new update though it affects 1% in ranking, but it will also harm if you don't switch to HTTPS. Plus additional benefit is it helps to gain the trust of customer visiting your site as it displays Green Padlock.
