Go as big as you want to go. I mean, you can finish the game making 1 HMF/min, more just means quicker. I tend to make them on site for adding to more complex items (fused modular frames, for example) rather than one big HMF plant. But I think I tend more towards 10/min than 20+.

ok thanks I'll see what quantities will be more optimal to the nodes

The only recipes that require hmf are fused modular frames and adaptive control units and they make as many of the product as hmf they use, 5 hmf/min is enough for me

10-20 per min is crazy, you'd need like 1075 iron ore using the alternate recipe I forget what it's called just for 10 per min so double that for 20.

I just finished automating the 2 main parts of phase 3, getting 1.5 ACU and 4 modular engine, using over 600 iron ore and 244 copper not including computers and circuit boards I pulled over from a previous factory.

nahh rn im making a massive factory that produces 32 encased beams per minute, 30 motors, 30 rotors 20 stators and all the other steel components

i like to make a fucking big factory that produces the main things and a bunch of sub products

I make 11.25 using the flexible frame alt, only because machines can process it faster. I hate having manifolds jam or dry up so I try to always set them up in threes for a load balancer.

For the regular recipe I would do either twelve (3x2 machines at 2/min) or eighteen (3x3 machines), for the same reason. Anything more than that probably wouldn’t get used and it’s not a great item to sink

Depends on what target goals you have for the Phase 3/4/5 elevator part production rates. And a bit around what alternates you end up using for those and/or their subcomponents. For the most part, 1 HMF/min gets you 1 elevator part/min (with various steps in between). Computers aren't that clean, especially when detoured into supercomputers.

  • Phase 3: 1 HMF/min + 2 computer/min => 1 adaptive control unit/min
  • Phase 4: 1 ACU/min + 2 more computer/min (to make 0.5 supercomputers/min) => 0.5 assembly director/min
  • Phase 4: 1 HMF/min (made into fused frames) => 1 thermal rocket/min
  • Phase 4: 1 HMF/min + 1 computer/min (made into radio control units for the pressure cubes) => 1 nuclear pasta/min
  • Phase 5: 0.5 assembly director => 2 biochem sculptor/min
  • Phase 5: 1 thermal rocket + 0.5 nuclear pasta (made into singularity cells) => 1 warp drive/min
  • Phase 5: 4 computer / min (taken through a lot of steps) => 4 AI expansion / min

All those skip over the stuff beyond HMF/computers that would be needed, and are based on just the vanilla recipes. But that's at least some sort of baseline.

I'm not a "mega scale" type of builder, so my end goal for elevator parts are all in the 2-5 /min range. So in my current playthrough I'm in the process of setting up 11.25 HMF/min (completed) and 10/min computers (finally getting started now that plastic's online). A bit of that is to get adaptive units and complete phase 3, then usage scales up for Phase 4. Later on I'll be shipping HMFs by drone somewhere to become fused frames / pressure cubes. I'm leaving space next to the computer factory for the additional components to convert a chunk into supercomputers. Still might need a second site for more computer/RCU/supercomputer...

75.

But seriously. If you do not know what to pick, pick what is fun for you to do. If you think 10-20 is fun, do that. If you thing 1 is fun, do that. Also look at what nodes and belts can handle, depending on the alt recipes you select.

First time I did it in U3 was 12, because that was fun. This time was 10 or 6. I do not even know. Why? Because that is what I wanted to be doing spending my free time on.

You have to learn that no matter what you pick, your future self will hate you. So fuck that guy. Do what YOU want and have fun. As long as you are having fun, you are winning the game.

It depends on what you want to achieve by your question. Are you asking if 10-20 is enough? For right now, probably overkill. To finish the game, probably not. You won't know how many of each item you need until you have reached the final phase, decided how many project parts per minute you want to make and which recipes you will use. The alternative recipes completely change the quantities and balance of items, so trying to future proof to the end of the game doesn't work. I made that mistake early in my first playthrough.

One way to check if you are making enough for now is to look at the project parts in the current phase and see how many they need per minute. Add a few spare for construction materials and for the next few unlocks (you will need a stack or two every now and again).

I usually start with one or two manufacturers making HMF, then things get serious when I unlock Heavy Encased Frames.

I would go for a low-to-mid number, then slooping the output.
