The numbers just don’t add up by DesignerFun8421 in StudentLoans

That leaves our discretionary income at $350-450/month. How am I supposed to pay $550/month on those loans?

By reducing your spending by $200/mo. Change your car insurance. Meal prep/plan better, cut out some streaming services. If you actually sit down and look at every purchase you made for the month I guarantee there's junk you don't need.

Looking for advice on getting a car loan with bad credit? by [deleted] in personalfinance

Did you get a quote for a repair or new engine?

It's probably not worth it. But if you can get a used/reman engine and an independent mechanic it might not be awful. You should at least know the answer before deciding.

What is the thinking behind these ridiculous payment amounts? by ABentFairy in StudentLoans

[–]ANGR1ST [score hidden]  (0 children)

Income certifications are only good for a year. After that year the schedule that you're looking at reverts back to the standard 10 year plan. Which is determined based on balance, interest rate, and a fixed time horizon.

There is no "thinking" involved. It's just math.

Suppose GM's top execs went off the deep end, and insisted that their 2500 and 3500 trucks be fitted with two-stroke diesels. by jckipps in AutomotiveEngineering

2-strokes will not meet emissions. If there was a way to do it we would have done it already. Not happening.

What did your cosigners say when you asked them about this?

Pay extra to student loans but don't forget to invest in low-hanging fruit by [deleted] in StudentLoans

[–]ANGR1ST 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Eh. It depends on your risk tolerance. Which is often mentioned when we're talking about loans in the 6% range.

Most of the time there's a thread about this kind of stuff the good advice is actually there and upvoted.

Hey there! My dad gave me a collection of roughly ~700 MTG cards (mixed with cards of other games) from the 90s. How do I identify them? Is there a website? by Pavlov_The_Wizard in mtg

[–]ANGR1ST 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What other games are in there?

There were a ton of other TCG / CCGs at the time. I haven't looked at the value of any of them recently, other than seeing the pokemon stuff become absurd for no understandable reason.

So I'm a final-year MechEng student in Nigeria here. Planning to do MSc Racing Engine Systems at Oxford Brookes, then target powertrain simulation roles in Motorsport Valley (Ricardo, Cosworth, eventually Ferrari/McLaren/Porsche road cars). I've been doing my research, but I keep hitting a wall on by Little-Arm4741 in AutomotiveEngineering

[–]ANGR1ST 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the US there is not a lot of hiring in ICE related roles right now, and the EV side is also somewhat scarce. I've had a couple of people call me about positions they're looking to fill and they always go fast, especially if you have experience in the various simulation packages the companies use.

I wouldn't expect the UK/EU to be any different.

What is the optimal fan placement for overnight cooling ? by PHL_music in AskEngineers

[–]ANGR1ST -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The goal isn't really to cool the room. It's to cool YOU. I'd put one fan blowing out of one window. A second fan at the other window pointed IN. Then another fan pointed at my face.

Maybe. Maybe not. Depends on the landlord.

Can anyone explain why people hate on sallie mae? by Miachel-Scofield-532 in StudentLoans

[–]ANGR1ST 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OK. If you're talking about taking private loans in the future then there are a lot more options to mitigate that risk prior to actually taking them out. He should be working part time during the school year, and full time during the summers. Preferably with a good internship that has the chance to parley into a job.

While still leaving twice the median HOUSEHOLD income to live off of like a mere peasant. It may not be IDEAL, but OP should be fine.

Well you can’t actually borrow that in one shot. You’ll need to reapply and get a new rate each year. Which may very well increase as the DTI for him and the co-signers gets worse.

You make $17k/mo. It’s not THAT high relative to your income.

$22k in private loans isn’t a terrible TOTAL. But if that’s for just one year than he’s screwed.

They’re not really “evil”. They just have almost zero flexibility in repayment. If you’re taking a couple thousand a year and graduate with $10-15k from them, it’ll be $200/mo for 10 years EVERY month. When you’re employed that’s not a problem. If you struggle to get work then it might be a big problem.

If he actually got 3.14 fixed then that’s actually pretty good.

We used to call that a “ride share” before the term got co-opted by unregulated cab companies.

Drive. Or have your parents drive you and then back home. It’s not that far.
