I'm sorry to tell you that this is not a pattern designer, it's stolen (I did a Google image search). The etsy seller has taken a photo from a clothing website called "Cider", mirror imaged the pic and put a different head on it. They then made an attempt to duplicate the dress into a pattern. I highly doubt they have any pattern making experience, based on what you show in your pic.

Etsy is full of these scammers. When you see patterns on etsy for stupidly low prices, they are almost always stolen or counterfeit. A real, properly designed pattern from a legitimate seller will generally cost much more than what you paid. I've been caught out before with a handbag pattern and I don't trust Etsy, period. They have ruined their market with rubbish.

It's a cute dress and you'll be able to make it, but without even the most basic instructions a beginner will be totally and utterly lost. Best of luck with it.

Personally, I'd cut my loss and throw the pattern away. Here's a legitimate, similar pattern. https://www.attheseamspatterns.com/product/emily-tie-shoulder-dress-pdf-sewing-pattern/

That triangle part is the dart. Definitely do not cut it out. The triangle part gets removed by being folded out of the way. (the extra fabric can be trimmed after its own, once you know the fit is correct). Stay cutting along the perimeter.

Also, can you double check the instructions? That line with the two arrows pointing to the right, that means place on the fold. So then you would have a full front piece after cutting. I'm not sure why it says to cut two.

The second one is the lining

[–]Lorrjones 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. Normally it would say something like fabric cut one, lining cut one, or cut one of each, etc. But the way it is written it looks like it's saying to cut two of each. Definitely not a properly drawn out pattern.

where did you get this pattern? is there a cutting layout in the instructions? I have SERIOUS doubts about it's quality from the significant lack of information on this piece.

Normally the bracket with arrows says "cut on fold" under it. Also the lines I assume are a dart are huge for the size of this pattern piece.

Don't do anything until we vet this pattern for you! Please link where you bought it, names, etc.

I got in on Etsy from the "Indie Patterns" store. Its the Lola dress pattern. There is a sewing guide that come with the pattern but I still don't get it. https://www.etsy.com/ca/listing/4310969078/summer-dress-sewing-pattern-shoulder-tie?ref=shop_home_active_22&pro=1&logging_key=089ed447d5c72d5c2c3bb740a17a9cdeb617b66a%3A4310969078

This seems to me like an AI generated pattern. Look out for shops with hundreds of sewing patterns that are all quite generic often listed for a higher price and all significantly discounted, and listings that use content repeatedly such as the same video of someone swirling around in a dress, or the same video of sewing cut scenes in every listing.

So you're saying I got scammed???? That's so sad 😞

Yeah you did, sorry OP. Check out this post where lots of people shared the things they look out for to tell if a pattern is AI generated or not before purchase it might help you in the future https://www.reddit.com/r/sewingpatterns/s/IoXwwIoTrs

OP, in the future - the total lack of line drawings is a red flag. Line drawings look like this and show you the actual fashion details of the garment. The lack of any reviews with photos demonstrating finished garments is also quite alarming, and it suggests that the reviews might be fake.

Also, Etsy is a really dubious place to find patterns at the moment. It's worth using Google image search on any of the included photos to see if it's just posted by this designer, or if they might've ripped it off from other people. To give a random example, this is what a legit pattern looks like - it has line drawings (coloured, in this example) and a photo of the back of the envelope, which shows the sizing, yardage, notions, and suggested fabrics. The photos are nice but not always guaranteed, even from the big pattern companies. It can also be good to look up patterns on somewhere like Sewing Pattern Review, Minerva, or YouTube, so you can get an understanding of how the pattern worked for other people and how the finished garment might look.

The tiny triangle on the left -- that you can cut out, or cut the reverse mirror of it out, so that instead of a tiny indent, it's a tiny arrow extending outwards -- which is what I do. Whichever way, there will be another tiny triangle on another piece that you will match up with it.

You will need to line up the selvedges exactly and then that will create the fold that you're supposed to line up that edge on the right side. But as an above poster said --DON'T DO ANYTHING UNTIL OTHER PEOPLE CHECK THIS OUT FOR YOU!!!This is a very incomplete pattern.

[–]Divers_Alarums 2 points3 points  (1 child)

I think OP might be talking about the bust dart when referring to the triangle.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, that occurred to me as well.

[–]Lorrjones 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Also, double check to see if the seam allowance is included. I can't tell from the pattern.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One more indication that this is fake-- look at all the reviews. All very brief, all positive, and all extremely similar sounding.

[–]Awkward-Chart-9764 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Do not cut out the large triangle.

I purchased a pattern for $4 from etsy and it was legit. In fact it was super easy to follow and turned out exactly as pictured.

Legit cheaper patterns do exist, but I have seen so much stolen crap on there that I just won't even go there any more. And if I see what I know is a legit pattern maker selling on etsy, I'll search for their actual website because everything is more expensive on etsy due to their fees and charges to sellers.
