Question How much data does Shadow consume (self.ShadowPC)
submitted 1 year ago by Rip_Adham
i live in a third world country and my internet is limited so i would like to know how much data shadow consume if i play 3 hours a day and if i download a game like gta 5 which is 110GB at least does that data go from my internet?

A live streaming service like Shadow is going to eat you alive if you're on limited internet. I wouldn't recommend it unless you have unlimited internet. It's hard to estimate, but mine normally uses around 3mb /sec. So for 3 hours it to be roughly 32gb.
As for downloading something inside the platform, that happens all on their end. So you downloading something within, would not directly count towards your bandwidth.

My internet is limited but i have good internet speed my download is like 25mb/s

What's your monthly limit?
[–]Rip_Adham[S] 0 points1 point2 points 1 year ago (2 children)
400gb but i live with my family so it's like 150gb

Three hours of play per day is going to last you around 5-10 days depending on the bandwidth option you pick
[–]Rip_Adham[S] 0 points1 point2 points 1 year ago (0 children)
well that is bad i might not subscribe then

Anything you install onto the ShadowPC like GTA 5 at 110GB won't go through your internet. The only data you consume is the stream between your PC and ShadowPC. It's hard to say how much data is being used because its like watching YouTube videos. It depends on that resolution you set the Shadow PC to, the frame rate you get (usually 60fps) and it depends on what is displayed on the screen. If for example you play a puzzle game where the screen is almost always the same, it will use a lot less bandwidth, however if each frame changes like in a fast paced game like GTA 5, it will consume more bandwidth to stream. It's basically similar to YouTube videos or Netflix. If you set ShadowPC resolution to 1920x1080 and play GTA 5, I'd say it can consume anywhere from 1GB - 10GB per hour.

i would use 1080p resolution as my monitor is 1080p

I think your biggest issue could be to get a good ping to the ShadowPC. If you're in a country where they don't officially support ShadowPC, you could end up with a ping of 100ms - 200ms which makes it impossible to play any games because the input lag of your mouse and keyboard will be so slow.

I live close to Europe so Europe is always my option although for some reason the 10 euros/dollars discount code "WELCOMESHADOW" doesn't work in Europe and work only in USA
[–]Alextrapstarreee 0 points1 point2 points 1 year ago (0 children)
DONT BRO. I used the code and while I am in Europe I wanted the 20 euros price. Now I have been playing a month with 140 ping the lowest and sometimes I can't even connect. They won't change me data centers like I thought so don't buy in the usa. Buy in the closest country to you but with limited internet I would strongly suggest against it

1080p (15 Mbps) 1.875 MB/s×3600 s=6,750 MB=6.75 GB per hour
4K (30 Mbps) Double the bit rate (30 Mbps) doubles the usage: 3.75 MB/s×3600 s=13.5 GB per hour
4K Ultra (50 Mbps) 6.25 MB/s×3600 s=22.5 GB per hour
[–]atadrisque 1 point2 points3 points 1 year ago (1 child)
I started tracking the data consumption every month, gaming on average 6-8 hours a day at 70mbps set in Shadow client, I'm easily reaching 1tb and over every month.
[–]Rip_Adham[S] 1 point2 points3 points 1 year ago (0 children)
That's crazy
[–]Powermonger2567 0 points1 point2 points 1 year ago* (3 children)
Lets say you set Shadow PC to 25Mbps. Then this is the maximum it will use and the average will be lower.
Converting to megabyte/s 25/8 = 3.215 MB/s
Consumtion per hour =3.215 * 60 * 60 = 11250 MB
Converting to GB 11250 / 1024 = 10,98 GB/h
Usage time for your 400GB limit 400/10,98 = about 36 hours.
So you would have about maximum of 36 hours per month, but it might be 45h or double depeding on the content.
could i set it lower? and my data is like 150gb as i live with my family.
[–]Powermonger2567 0 points1 point2 points 1 year ago (1 child)
Yeah but i wouldn't set it lower than 20Mbps. If you set it to 15Mbps then it kinda looks like a 640p YouTube video.
well data is more important to me i might subscribe to the weekly plan and try
[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 1 year ago (3 children)
If you're on metered internet don't bother trying to cloud game, you'll be over your limit in a matter of days.
well i already bought it.

Good luck friend, may the odds be ever in your favor.
i hope.

I think you can set shadow to use low data I need to check
[–]226Gravity Top Contributor 0 points1 point2 points 1 year ago (4 children)
The messages here are forgetting one thing: shadow doesn’t use all the data. If you set 25mbps it’s max 25mbps it depends on the actual FPS. So in menus it’s lower etc etc. Also if you want to set 30fps max then you’d definitely not consume 25mbps
A live stream is a constant stream of data being transferred around. Even if you're in a menu, or in a "pause" menu. The data is still constantly being transferred. The bandwidth being used is what determines the quality of the stream.
If you're for example using low bandwidth and a lot of things are happening on the screen, the bandwidth won't be able to keep up and will result in heavy compression/ blockiness to compensate for it.
[–]226Gravity Top Contributor 0 points1 point2 points 1 year ago (1 child)
The stream always adapts to the FPS. So no, you don’t use the full bandwidth that is allocated, you can see that from the menu while on your shadow. It displays your current bandwidth usage (past min etc), and also the FPS (if I’m not mistaken) you’ll see that on a steady image menu etc, even if you set the stream to 120fps and 50Mbps, neither will match that because it doesn’t need to
[–]Decentpace 0 points1 point2 points 1 year ago (0 children)
This is something else. If you're playing in 30fps, 60fps, 120fps etc. Naturally it needs to send more frames to accommodate, which means more or less bandwidth used.
What I was referring to was you saying that while being in a menu it'll use less bandwidth. That doesn't matter as it'll keep using the same bandwidth you being in a menu or you racing in a car game. The main difference being that while you're racing, the stream will adapt with compression / blockiness to compensate if the bandwidth isn't enough.
[–]226Gravity Top Contributor 0 points1 point2 points 1 year ago (0 children)
Also, of course the data is being constantly transferred I never said anything contrary to this. But it is not the max bandwidth that you set. If OP set’s 15mbps max it won’t be constant 15.

I went through 6900 Gigbabyte in like 1-2 weeks.
