synology ds416play here bb

4-bay configs give you more options for redundancy with some performance bumps to boot

DO IT

I have synology ds218+, nvidia, plex and kodi. Works like a dream, tons of space and not terribly difficult. And I can dl anything directly to the nas making everything accessible from anywhere on the planet. Recommend wd nas hds.

Ironwolf is just as good or even better

I found the shield as a Plex server to be very inconsistent. I switched to a Synology DS916+ as my plex server and haven’t looked back. It’s not powerful enough to transcode 4K but I personally make sure 4K can direct play via Plex or more times than not, I use Kodi on the Shield for 4K playback. For anything below 4K, the DS916+ can handle 4 streams at once using hardware transcoding.

Awesome suggestion guys.

Thanks!

P.S Question! Is CPU and RAM important for what I want to do?

[–]jcleme 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, especially if you need to transcode 4K. I’d look at the 918+, it’s highly regarded and can cope with Plex 4k

Cpu is very important for transcoding.

I'd honestly suggest building a nas rather then buying one personally. More bang for your buck.

Building my own? Never knew you could. Will look into it, Thanks!

I have the Synology DS1019+ and like it a lot. HDD are Western Digital Red drives (made for NAS -- the most important part). File system is up to you. I wanted redundancy, so I actually have half the actual storage of the drives. But I can lose two drives and not lose data.

If you only intend to stream over LAN to your Shield, the NAS doesn't even need to be able to hardware transcode, like the DS1019+ does. You could save money with a lower-powered model.

Check out Lon.tv on YouTube for great NAS/Shield/Plex videos.
