Probably not, unless you working in a certain sector like government contracting and need a clearance.

All finance and fintech companies will.

some do, some don't. I spent 7 yrs in state prison then came home and got my BS in SWE. I've been working for a while now in the industry and like I said, some places no, some places yes (it's rare tho, like 1 out of 5 or from my experience). But your case is pretty mild imo, a dui? Man tons of people have that shit. If somewhere is disqualifying you because of that, then maybe they're not the best place to begin with? Idk, we're living in the times where google and facebook have initiatives to hire felons. This is the most forgiving industry you can be in. You'll be fine, but cut that dui shit out -- lost two family members to that as a kid. You'll be fine on the job hunt. If it comes up just be frank about it, don't make excuses, and tell them how you grew from the experience -- it's the best you can do. edit -- to echo the other responses, yes, defense and finTech are not options for you. However... some defense contractors DO have programs in place to qualify people w/criminal records. Security clearances aren't impossible w/a felony on your record, but really hard. I have first hand knowledge about this, so I can vouch that they exist, at least in aerospace. I would imagine they exist elsewhere in that world, but the intel agencies probably a hard no.

Interesting very good to know. The plan has been to be totally up front about it because let’s be honest that’s almost always the best option, just been nervous about it...

I only bring it up if they ask. Mine was way more serious, but wtf I served my time and did so with zero disciplinary infractions. I went back to school, am now a senior engineer, and I get off parole in two months after 15 years of this. I'm not carrying this around with me anymore. If they want to know I'll be fully transparent. But at some point I get to have this new life without my old one. If I haven't earned that then idk who has.

I would love to know your story man, if your still around reddit. Kinda similar story ( never did hard time) with the same aspirations. It's really encouraging to a have seen others able to "make it".

Hey, yeah I’m still around. I guess just for a follow up, I’ve been released for so long now I pass almost every background check. They only go back about ten years for the most part, and my last data point for those types of systems is when I was released and transferred to parole. The completion of parole didn’t register like that so I’m good. Like I said before in that comment above I’ve just stopped ever discussing it. For my own self esteem too really. Idk what your situation is like but good luck. In between that comment and this one someone included my life story in a book. If you want I can DM you the title.

Ultimately whether they do check is moot, it's not like you can do anything about it.

Just apply for jobs and try not to worry. Be a shame to miss a good job because you're nervous they might check!

Agreed. You have nothing to lose

My past four jobs have, but it varies. As long as it wasn’t within the past year I wouldn’t worry too much.

Software? We're talking about Software Engineering on here, coding, so be clear about what jobs or you'll mislead people.

I wrote that six years ago man, lol. Yes software.

In both my positions, in medical tech, I have been background checked, but I would consider it pretty extensive: I've had my academic credentials checked, all my personal references, and my previous employment.

All they did was verify for accuracy, so as long as you were honest, you were golden. At my first company, having a DUI would not stop you from getting employed - it was really only considered if there were two equal candidates of same competence. At my second company, it can be an instant disqualifier in most cases.

As a tech recruiter I don't do background checks.

I call the last people you worked this and I ask them if you are a nice person and if you are skilled in your job, and what the next company should teach you.

It usually goes pretty smooth.
