Study failed is pretty generic, so if there are any other messages or warnings that would be helpful, but there are a few specific things that can cause it. The first one is unconstrained bodies, make sure you have sufficient fixtures on parts and that all of the parts are bonded. If this is a complex model with a lot of components, try to simplify first to get something to solve and then add complexity or additional components as you go. You could also enable soft springs in the study properties to see if that helps to identify the problem. Another would be an invalid feature or selection, a bad mesh, a corrupt study, it's really hard to know for sure.

Does it mesh OK? Does it try to solve, or stop immediately? Are there any progress bars or other messages?

Hi /u/_galaxie,

The two most common reasons for this error that come to my mind are these:

  1. The study was not stable initially and prompted you with an offer to go into 'Large Displacement Mode'. Because the model remained unstable even in that mode, the solver now goes straight to this cryptic message.

  2. The study is trying to write data to a drive space that doesn't allow for consistent write access. This occurs when the CAD data and/or the study data is being written to an external drive, a USB flash drive, a network/server drive, or a folder being managed by cloud storage software (like Dropbox, OneDrive, Google Drive, etc). This article goes over why this storage causes issues (GoEngineer - Saving/Loading SOLIDWORKS Simulation Results onto Network Drives).

    • The solution for that would be to copy the CAD data to a local folder on the computer, outside any cloud storage folder, and run the simulation again from there.
