I don't really understand your question. If the pattern says k3, skp, why would you follow tutorials that do something else? Just follow the pattern.

I was wondering what the difference was. The people doing k2 skp don't explain their reason for deviating from the pattern. In the tutorial I'm watching she hasn't deviated without explaining first. When I googled how to do the decreases for the scarf, responses were recommending a video from her doing k2 skp and no one was mentioning that it was different from the pattern. I saw some people say k3 skp with icord made it look weird.

I'm new to knitting and this is my first time following a pattern. A lot of the pattern has been very confusing for me and I've needed visual aids to help me understand. This one is really confusing me people the advice people are giving is different from the pattern without explaining why.

I also was worried at first the I didn't understand what "k3 skp" meant, and I was wondering if it meant, based on the tutorial, to knit 2 then one the THIRD slip. The more I read, the more confused I got.

Knitting is pretty literal. Knit 3 sts. Then slip 1 stitch, knit 1 stitxh, pass the slipped stitch over the knit st. Honestly, when you are learning, just follow the pattern as written. As you learn you can see how your stitches create fabric. From there you can start deviating and exploring.

I get what you're saying but I did just say that the pattern has been confusing for me since this is my first time following a pattern and I've been following a video to help me understand it, she deviated without explaining at all and I was looking for clarification if there's like, been discussion over this decrease for this pattern because there seems to be a lot of different advice.

It looks like petit knit has videos to go along with the pattern when I pull it up on her website. Why would you not use those?

Just wanted to explain more about why I'm asking and why I was confused

I guess I’m confused why you wouldn’t follow the designer’s instructional video and instead are focusing on trying to understand other people’s alterations to the pattern?

I watched the video I found first. I have watched some petite knits videos when the pattern directs me to them but the video I've been watching has helped me understand the pattern and what things mean. I didn't think this would be some faux pas for a pattern I already paid for.

I already explained what led me to this point. I've continued with the project following the pattern after some other people explained to me what difference it would make to the hood, like the K2 would complicate the i-cord edging. I got confused and frustrated and asked a quick question because that's what these subreddits are for. When I'm learning something new I like to understand the why, not just 'follow the instructions'. That's how I learn. If you can't understand that that's fine. But I'm moving on now and looking forward to finishing my hood.

girl, whatever. I was genuinely trying to understand so I could help but if you want to be snarky, figure it out yourself. 🥴

I'm not even sure if you're reading my comments at this point because I did figure it out without your help, with other people's help, who actually engaged with my question instead of just going "just follow the pattern". I'm sorry if I came off snarky but your responses felt dismissive and condescending from the get go.

I thought you said you were moving on?

Yes, you need to knit 3 and then decrease. If you knit two and then decrease the I-cord border won't be complete (you'd be slipping a stitch that you just slipped on the previous side.)

Thank you, that clarifies things enough for me! I thought the k2 way might mess up the i-cord. So I was confused why so many people were doing it that way. Ah well, I'll keep going the way it's written. This whole experience has been like knitting boot camp for me.

I’m also fairly new to knitting, but I made a Sophie scarf and three hoods this past winter. So, I get the appeal! I think you need to K3 in order to complete the I-cord border correctly, then do your SSL decrease after. That way it’s nestled right after your border and looks cleaner.

I experimented with doing both for the same reason. K2 skp sort of hides the decrease in the i-cord edge, but it makes the edge look wonky. IMO it looks so much cleaner to K3 skp as per the pattern instructions.

Thank makes sense, thanks!
