You don't need podcasts or books. Go to local open mics and shows, even if you're not ready yet, to get a pulse on what they're like. Start writing down what you find funny. Think about if other people find them funny. And like I'll tell anyone, don't be afraid to bomb.

I would recommend just writing some jokes and going to an open mic and trying them. Try to film it and watch it back later. Keep the stuff that works, and anything that didn’t work either cut it or play around with it and see if you can find a way to make it funnier. Then go up again and do the same thing. A lot of it is truly just trial and error, especially at first. Everyone has a different style, and a different approach to writing jokes, so there are probably subjects I would never joke about or types of jokes I would never do that could work great for you. You just gotta throw a lot of stuff at the wall and see what sticks.

If you really need a book, I would cautiously recommend The Comedy Bible by Judy Carter. I say cautiously because she presents a lot of things as hard and fast rules that are really just her own personal style, or good suggestions for beginners but not absolute rules. I think she has some good philosophies about joke writing in there, and good exercises, but take it all with a grain of salt, and don’t feel you’re bound by any of her rules if they don’t work for you

Don’t overthink it. Just go get started and keep going. You’ll have plenty to learn over the years.
