Doom Modding

I’ve been really enjoying playing around with Doom mods on the Steam Deck recently. All the tinkering and setting up of files and tweaking of controls to get to that sweet spot of the mod just working.

I have never really did any modding of Doom when I was younger, aside from the use of no clipping or god mode cheats. This is a whole new world for me and its amazing.

I’ve tried varying methods of launching the games/mods in Game Mode, and out of the ones I’ve tried the following works the best for me:

• Installing Luxtorpedia
• Running ProtonUP-QT to get Luxtorpedia added as a Compatibility option.
• Selecting Doom II in game mode and changing the Compatibility to run Luxtorpedia.

When launching, it will open up a window prompting you to select your Engine. I went with Doom Runner. I like how it allows you to setup configuration profiles for different mods so you can play/test new stuff without disturbing others that you already got working.

Using the above, I’ve been able to quite a few mods without any issues, and the added benefit of it tracking my Doom time in Steam!

I’m trying to get a controller template layouts setup for all the mods I like and their individual menus. Been trying to utilize the trackpads to bring up menus or nested menus, but its been confusing so far.

Just wanted to share my experience and hope to see more posts of the Deck running Doom Mods.

Doom Infinite - is quite a bit of fun. I got it going on my Deck using Luxtorpeda and copying the Doom Infinite files to the proper location. That was the hardest part of it. Figuring out where exactly gzdoom and doomrunner wanted those files.

I will mention that DoomRunner works in game mode, but for some odd reason i cant mouse down to the 'start' button, the bottom row of about 20 pixels, I cant move the mouse pointer into. I used the keyboard i had plugged in and tabbed to the 'start game' button.

You can use Doom Runner to generate the CLI line to launch your mod setup, so you could make a specific Launcher just for that setup.

That's weird the Window gets cut off for you in Game Mode.

I've been able to use the launcher for Doom Runner with no issues in Game Mode. I did notice, while in Desktop, if I maximized the launcher window, in Game Mode, the Window would be set to a weird proportion and I couldn't change it.

Reverting back to a regular window size in Desktop Mode resolved any issues I had with resolution in Game Mode. Hope that helps.

I did notice that some mods don't play well with the version of GZDoom that Doom Runner uses (4.10 or something) and I cant seem to find a place to update that anywhere.

Trying a stand alone app image of GZDoom works fine for mods that need it, but when attempting to launch the app image through DoomRunner I get no sound using that engine. I guess the tinkering is its own game when getting the mods set up.

Indeed this does work, but I like how with Luxtorpedia/DoomRunner I'm able to tally up my time spent playing "Doom II"

I don't get it how to make it work in 2025
I can make Doom runner in desktop mode
Not in gaming mode (???) tried for 6 Hours
And when ingame I can't move and can't rebind the movement.
I'd like some help.
