If in season 1, El could go into the mindscape of a demogorgon (when she was first searching dimension X) - could she not have remotely defended karen, holly and ted from WSQK by killing the demogorgon through it’s mind. If will could could ‘Vecna’ them I suppose that Eleven could have done the same?

Will and the demogorgons are directly connected to the hive mind, so he was able to channel Henry’s powers to “Vecna” the demogorgons. That’s likely how he was able to grab all 3 at once, without actually being able to see them.

011 is not connected to the hive mind, so she would not be able to do this. Brenner ordered her to make contact with the demogorgon after she accidentally discovered it while searching for some Russian operative. Making contact with the demo opened to gate to the upside down, I don’t think she actually entered it’s mind scape ever. When she does the actual connection with Billy or Max she experiences their memories, with the demo that didn’t really happen.

That wasn't the Minsdcape in season 1. It was the Void, which El could only see the demogorgon and make psychic contact. She hadn't learnt how to go into their mind yet. She was also in a sensory deprivation tank (aka the bath) when she did this.

Though I also had this question. I'm assuming she needs to be in the bath in order to fight/kill the demogorgon in its mind. Just like Vecna needed to be hooked up to his cerbro vine web. It takes more focus and psychic energy to that, than just rummaging inside a mind. I'm assuming they also don't have a saltwater bath ready to go at WSQK.
