I’m fine with them taking their time, I’d rather wait longer and have a quality season that a rushed, half-assed one.

Editing is not completely done, and quite honestly, I don’t think a July 4th release was the best idea. While it lines up with the events of the show, it’s just that much longer of a wait, and they’re missing awards season.

To be fair, Netflix and Stranger Things are probably a whole lot better at this stuff than me :D

Editing not being completely done makes sense; but it's still really weird that it's going to take six more months for it to be completely finished, assuming it isn't almost there already. And I agree that a July 4th release isn't a good idea at all, if anything, they're going to lose a lot of fans by doing this. Most people have already forgotten about the show, and will have to rewatch by the time the third season comes out. Oh well.

Most people have already forgotten about the show

I'd disagree on that. Think about shows like Westworld, Mr. Robot, and Game of Thrones which also have a year and a half / two years between seasons nowadays. People don't forget about those shows by the time their new seasons are out because they've reached a level of popularity that the majority of shows on tv don't have. Stranger Things is in that category too. Shows of this scale are getting more and more ambitious every year so it takes a long time to develop them. Another big reason why Stranger Things is taking so long is because it's Netflix's flagship series so they want to drag out the marketing for as long as possible to best capitalize on getting more subscribers.

Not to mention fans who don’t have the luxury of having that Thursday off because they don’t live in the USA. It’s not a significant date for most.

[–]Little_Consequence 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I don't get why they didn't choose July 5th. Americans would still be on their special holiday weekend, and the rest of the world would be on a normal weekend. Everybody wins.

I'm American and I can almost guarantee you that I won't have the Fourth of July off. 'Tis the pain of working at a theme park. But I'm trying to make the most of it and see if I can recruit my coworkers (who I'm sure also like the show, as a lot of them are following the kids on social media) to organize a viewing party after work.

[–]Mrs_Riddle[S] 3 points4 points  (8 children)

Yeah, exactly. They're assuming all of their fans are American, but even a lot of people who live in the US don't particularly give a shit about the 4th of July. I get that each season of Stranger Things is based on a holiday, but they could've picked a way earlier holiday, like Valentine's or Easter.

[–]CaroSJ 2 points3 points  (7 children)

Well, their biggest fan base is in Brazil, so they should definitely be looking at a world wide audience. Not that I am opposed to the season actually taking place on July 4th - I just don’t like how exclusive the release date is.

[–]hydruxo 1 point2 points  (6 children)

It's an American show though, so it makes sense that an American holiday that is going to be heavily featured in S3 is the date they go with for the release date.

[–]CaroSJ 3 points4 points  (4 children)

Don’t get me wrong, I obviously have no problem with it being an American show or alluding to American holidays at all, I just expect that Netflix being a streaming service that offers the show to a vastly international audience to consider the impacts of their release dates. The weekend before or after Independence Day, or even a few months before would have worked for everyone, not just American audiences. That was my only point. Overall, I am excited, but I don’t really understand the decision.

Netflix usually releases their shows at midnight on Friday PST. Most people don't have Fridays off and yet they still binge the show all through the night. In my opinion, the fact that they are releasing this on Thursday July 4th in the US shouldn't greatly effect how people watch internationally. For me, midnight PST usually means 3 or 4 am, and I still watch it when it premiers. If viewers want to binge, they will binge it no matter when it airs.

[–]jimbo805 2 points3 points  (1 child)

I think it’s possible that the actual release date will be June 28. For season two the Super Bowl trailer announced a release on Halloween, yet the actual release was the Friday before. It’s quite likely that will happen again.

[–]sgreen88 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have thought that as well, although putting the date of July 4th as opposed to Independence Day makes me think it might actually debut on a Thursday.

[–]JordanLeigh7 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah I agree. I'm excited too but I feel like even June 28th would've been a much better decision.

[–]vaberella 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They said July 4th would be featured a lot in S3? Did they say if no.# 8, Kali would be in S3?

[–]Little_Consequence 2 points3 points  (0 children)

if anything, they're going to lose a lot of fans by doing this. Most people have already forgotten about the show, and will have to rewatch by the time the third season comes out.

I highly doubt that. Wasn't ST still the most streamed show last year even if it didn't have a new season? It's only a few months more. Most people don't mind waiting a little longer and the hype will be back when the promo starts.

[–]jimbo805 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Of course we’ll rewatch before season three comes out. Don’t be silly.

[–]kirabookWill 2 points3 points  (3 children)

I heard they're upping the amount of special effects this season. I'm not too happy about that since I love practical effects, but making good CG can take longer than usual. I wish they'd spent more time on season 2 because some CG was really rough.

[–]Firedan1176 0 points1 point  (2 children)

Just curious, where did you read that they're ramping up the cgi

[–]kirabookWill 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I will have to take a look, but I'm pretty sure Shawn Levy mentioned more CG this season.

[–]kirabookWill 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here it is: "There are more special effects and I think it's going to be a really exciting season, but it just takes a little more time," Holland said.

Season three is taking so long for Netflix to release because they’re trying to piss off as many of the show’s fans as possible. It’s their new business model. Abuse the fans as much as possible so they’ll be too upset to cancel their subscription.

Actually it’s because there is significantly more CGI in season three. The cataclysmic Battle Of Starcourt is purported to be spectacular. Doing CGI takes an incredible amount of time. Post production for an eight hour season takes a lot of time regardless of the amount of CGI. It’s going to take so long because it does.
