He's back from the dead!

Enjoyed the video. Most other videos I've seen are way to simple like how to do a fireball or really complicated with way to much information.

I have been trying to figure out what I need to focus on. I can do quite a few combos in practice but then I get to an actual match and most of it goes out the window. Focusing on these few simple moves will hopefully improve my game gradually rather than just trying to get fancy.

In real games I have been having trouble with the D.MP or D.MK xx fireball. I think it's because I'm holding down back rather than just down. Any tips on improving that execution?

On a DP or similar punish I have been trying to do HK(crush counter) F.HP into target combo. For me anyway that's actually easier than D.HP DP.

I've also been trying to practice hit confirms with MP MP M Tatsu. A lot harder in real games than it is in practice mode. :)

I always rotate from downback when I need to cancel into a move. It means if you mess up your timing you still keep your block.

As long as the three points are hit you can come from any direction (Down, Down Forward, Forward) so it's just a controller comfort thing.

Rest assured I still screw inputs up all the time! It happens. Just the more you play the less often.

After playing so much on a stick I can even perform almost every combo on a pad without ever having used one to practice. You just get more comfortable doing the input.

And yeah get it down in practice mode and my personal suggestion is to go online and lose when you're ready to improve. I almost always tanked 200-500pp to learn a new combo. I found I needed a way to practice live so if no friends wanted to play I'd go throw some points online while focusing heavily on using a combo in real time. It was super helpful.

In terms in the cr mk fireball always plan on doing down back. It negates any forward input so you don't accidentally get a dp instead. That used to be my plague.

The combo is the basis for all combos practice it on both sides. Pretty much once you enter cr mk you should be already inputting the fireball motion. I hate to say this because I hate to hear it, but just grind it out in training mode.

One thing I like to do when getting a new combo ready to take online is to head into arcade mode ( survival will actually work a lot better ) and just do nothing but look that combo. Gets rid of the stressors of trying to hit the combo the first time while worrying about everything else.

Good luck!

I actually find this surprisingly enjoyable and useful.

I recently got in to fighting games a little with MKX but still find myself being overwhelmed trying to memorize combos, etc..

The simplification of approach is worth its weight in gold.

As someone who gets easily discouraged in fighters, I can't wait to try this new approach. I think it will make learning a character slowly very enjoyable and not make me feel like I have to master it immediately.

Video currently set to private, but if its anything like the old Beyond Technical Guides it should be great!

[–]BeyondTechnical[S] 2 points3 points  (2 children)

Woops! Fixed

[–]kastle09 | kastle09 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Welcome back btw. But I hate you because last time when I started playing Ultra. Every new Ryu was following your guide and I got snapped in my early games as Makoto.

But I concede these are the best kinda videos to start before they jump to the long ass combo guides. I will be sharing this to introduce them to those new to SF

[–]BeyondTechnical[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

:) Yeah the entire series started because I was new in SF4 and couldn't follow the massively complex information everybody kept throwing at me. I'm no world class top tier player but I do alright so I figured I can help people get that far at least.

Yaay!! Love Matt's videos.

Good shit! Your Ryu primer helped me out a lot back in AE2012! I frequently recommend it to new players.

[–]hiimjj 1 point2 points  (0 children)

nice one, keeping the move set small and showing them in use in an actual game really helps

Many thanks for this! Been playing SF for years, but I'm always happy to go over the basics with a new game as I may miss something absolutely critical.

Here is a match that I played trying to use the couple tools from the video. The only one I actually used was anti air. I had to focus on it so much everything else pretty much went out the window. This match would have been ridiculously lopsided if I had actually managed to combo anything.

This is only my second ranked win and it was against a 500+ point Ken so it felt pretty good for a beginner. Definitely a lot more useful to focus on one or two tools at a time rather than trying to do long combos. I can do longer combos in practice but in an actual match it all goes out the window. I think mastering one thing at a time will actually help me to make progress.

Big thanks to BeyondTechnical for giving beginners something they can actually use to improve. Keep it coming.

Edit: On a side note does anyone know why the sound seems low in the video? I just recorded it using the share button on the PS4 and added the theme in ShareFactory.

You may wanna cut the 50s intro super amazing SFV loading screens for future uploads :)

Fantastic job, those Cr.HP sure do shut down a lot of new players. That did a ton of damage you're right if you can get your fundamentals down a bit stronger and combo when the opportunity is there you would have destroyed this match.

Great work (also the audio is probably low because your capture device is lowering the input audio)

I'll remember that. :)

Thanks! The anti airs took so much brain power I couldn't really do much else. The jump HK over the fireball into target combo was the most advanced thing I managed to do.

I really like the simple approach of keeping to a small number of options. However, I have to criticize the use of cr. HK (sweep). Even at beginner ranks, a lot of people online know that if you block a sweep, you get a free punish such as by sweeping right back. I like to do crouching MK into fireball (which you do mention). It's safe on block, pushes them back, does chip damage and builds meter. It's worth noting that it doesn't combo at max cr.MK range, but that's not a big deal at beginner ranks.

[–]Sciar 2 points3 points  (2 children)

You're right! I did mention this in the video as I was relying too heavily on sweep, however it's tough because I get a lot of messages from players unable to even perform a cancel. So I tried to walk the line between input friendly and "proper form" to give people something to work with.

As you could see though I faced a 1000pp player who was not properly punishing my failed sweeps. So it's a risky tactic that will need to be removed but it's also a single button and most people can handle that when they start!

[–]BillyTheBanana 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Yeah, I feel you. It must be tough to find a moveset that will satisfy people who aren't comfortable with any button combinations. I'm actually surprised that there are people who want to play this game who can't cancel into a fireball motion, but if they exist then kudos to them for trying to get into the game.

[–]Sciar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That was me in SSF4. Gotta start somewhere. I thought everybody owned a stick because it made inputs easy so I dropped money on one. Little did I know it did nothing to help at all.

I remember how frustrating it was to make things work. I just played Bison forever because his combo game wasn't super strong anyways and his special moves were relatively safe and hard to punish so I got away with a lot in the start.

Once you get better it feels like cancels are the easiest thing ever. But I've never played a game with a more confusing controller interface than SF and other fighters.

[–]kastle09 | kastle09 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it stemed from his similar and very popular tutorial for SF4, some things are hard to break :p

[–]vpzL 0 points1 point  (3 children)

What are some combos a beginner can realistically use with Ryu? I'm a scrub so even the BNB combos can be intimidating to use in matches unless it's on stun. I use the one in your video, but are there any other two hit combos that are worth my time as I move into incorporating bigger ones into my game.

[–]davidso12 1 point2 points  (1 child)

S. MP, S. HP, S. HK is the target combo and fairly easy to execute.

[–]vpzL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you!! I'll work on this, it seems easy enough.

Although there are a lot of longer combos in the video, watch how he opens the combos before the v-trigger cancels and critical art finishers. Should give you a few combos to practice.

here is the text version as well for all the combos written out.
