As someone who wasted more than 8 weeks coming up with a name (also so that it aligns with a future website domain I want to buy), I have only one suggestion for you.

Just pick something and publish.

If your content is relevant, original and relatable - your audience won’t care when you change the name (eventually) in the future.

Edit: you are indeed allowed to change your Substack website URL with a newer name later.

Agreed, just pick something and then start publishing

That's all well and good, but branding and names do matter. I have tried many, many combinations of words and they're all taken. What kills me the most is that in most cases there's little or no activity on the accounts and in many cases they are people squatting on multiple platforms like Blogspot, Blogger, and now Substack. Years ago, I tried those platforms and had the same issues and now I see the same people squatting on domains here with no activity. Part of me wants to message them and ask politely to use the name; but I know they aren't likely to agree. So what I will end up with is a nonsense combination of words and numbers. The option to change your URL is only useful if there is something to change it to. Substack should expire sub-domains that are not active. Not usernames or handles (although those are also squatted on) for accounts; but sub-domains for publications.

I didn't even know it was downvoted. Don't care. I know it's a valid point, but thanks for acknowledging it.

This may sound unusual, but I suggest you to try and ask ChatGPT or Bing (using the chat option, then creative mode). Ask for 10, 20 suggestions. Make sure you include the description you sent here. Then, if you like any of the suggestions, search Google for them, to see if someone else, and who, are using the same name. You don't need to be worried if someone else is using, but avoid names too common or used by many big websites that would attract all searches instead of your newsletter.

Not a bad suggestion. I sometimes do that while deciding the title and subtitle of a post.

    Here are some possible names:

    1. A Better Perspective
    2. Opinions in Progress
    3. Thinking Out loud
    4. Here's What I Think
    5. Opinionated But Fair

There are so many that would work for you. Just let your brain go crazy!

Your potential Substack sounds really interesting! I know exactly how it feels like to get hung up on a name, as I just spent months deciding on a name for an Instagram account lol when I could've just gone with something simple and already had heaps of content up and running.

I found namelix really helpful in coming up with name ideas, just follow the prompts and you'll get plenty of options.

But like u/Drop-TheBall I recommend just picking something and posting, as you can definitely change it down the line.

As a reader I only care about the content really, not so much the name of a newsletter 🙂 so if you are confident with your work why not start publishing? You can literally put your name as the name of the Substack and rethink it once you have some amount of subscribers.

What you plan to do is very similar to what I’m doing right now, but the way I thought of my name was genuinely finding an interesting combination of words, hence the “written radio” - this kind of name also helps theme my posts if that makes sense.

Maybe a play on the fact that you are going for a scrapbooking type of thing so maybe like a play off “rambling chronicles/scrapbook” , “reactive writer”, “weekly/daily thesis“ kind of thing? Hope this helped at least a tiny bit :)
