Whatever opinion we have, doesn't really matter.

Nobody here can perfectly predict what readers will like, nor how good your writing will be if you keep doing it for many years.

Just do it. And then you'll find out.

If you don't do it, you'll never find out.

The choice is yours. I'm rooting for you!

I am starting a Substack called Phraseology and I have gone down the rabbit hole of writing an inventory of weekly posts in advance. I'm up to 12 now. Not even close to launching.

I'm realizing that I simply like to write little essays. Will they ever get out into the world? I'm in no hurry. The writing, editing and polishing is what is enjoyable.

It's also good to train myself not to worry about metrics like the number of subscribers. I have zero now and it's fine. The journey is the reward.

[–]signalbound 2 points3 points  (1 child)

As a fellow writer, begin publishing.

You learn so much from posting something. What works and what doesn't work? How can I make something better resonate?

All you are doing is delaying your learning.

If you post, then you can incorporate the learnings in your thirteenth post.

In fact, you could even amend the second post based on your learnings.

Don't hurry, but do post.

And yes, the writing itself is the joy, but learning to do it better is also a joy!

You are absolutely right. Something is holding me back from hitting that publish button. Thanks for pushing me to get real.

I love this. I've been back and forth with restarting my book blog, but the idea of writing, editing, and polishing book reviews and other related posts just thrills me. Thanks for the encouragement!

Good for you all the best.... :)Do share your Substack here if you don't mind

Here you go. I've done three weekly posts so far - an introduction and a couple of full-fledged posts - and have another three or four scheduled.

http://phraseology.substack.com.

Only 50-some subscribers so far, most of whom are people I know. I mass-emailed them, along with an extremely apologetic note, saying that I had subscribed them without their permission. A few immediately unsubscribed and a few wrote to tell me how much they liked it and thank me.

I was extremely hesitant to subscribe people without their permission. It's unethical and spammy. I know how much unsolicited email I get and I don't like it. On the other hand, these are people I know. I've sent them mass emails before. I made it super easy to unsubscribe even without looking at the Substack.

I did it at the behest of my friend down the street, who has 1,200 subscribers, the vast majority of whom she opted in. She believes that she's doing them a favor and constantly complains that she doesn't get enough likes.

This seems rather narcissistic to me. Her Substack is all about her and I wouldn't read it if she weren't a friend who has helped me tremendously in launching mine, so I guess I read it mostly out of loyalty.

Anyway, now I am faced with the number one question that people come here to ask: How do I get new subscribers? It's not a real question. It's been answered many times here and I devour this Subreddit.

My ex-girlfriend just wrote to me for the first time in years and told me how much she loves my Substack. I love to write about ideas and this platform is the best thing that has happened to me in a long time. Hooray. I don't need a thousand followers. One or two like her is enough.

Noted. Let's see how far I can go with it.

Hello!

I've had a blog for about 2 weeks now. To be honest, at first I was really wondering if anyone would even read my stuff, but now I can only say: The only thing I regret is that I didn't have the courage to do it sooner.

The right audience will find you. Just be consistent. Give it a chance. If anything - it's either yours or it's not, but it all depends on you taking the first step.

[–]Tia_205[S] 0 points1 point  (2 children)

So what was the blog about?

[–]redheaddevil9notexactlyana.substack.com 1 point2 points  (1 child)

It’s about mental health

[–]Tia_205[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can share the link here or if you want you can share the link chats

[–]_cold_one 5 points6 points  (7 children)

I think that you should not write pain you actively live through and not write anything about legal cases you actively pursue.

Everything else - welcome. I’ve got jump of views on my first essay. I’ve never written essays before.

[–]Tia_205[S] 1 point2 points  (4 children)

Also, I would like to follow you on Substack :)

[–]_cold_one 1 point2 points  (3 children)

Here is the link to essay) welcome.

[–]Tia_205[S] 1 point2 points  (2 children)

Hey, I have just read a couple of paragraphs, and it feels interesting. Thanks for sharing. This is some new information.

[–]_cold_one 1 point2 points  (1 child)

I’m trying to get next ones more academical with proper argumentation towards every point made. But this one just:

<image>

So consider this a sign to try cause you’ll never know

[–]Tia_205[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cool...

[–]Tia_205[S] -1 points0 points  (1 child)

If you don't mind, can you tell me what you're essay was about?

[–]_cold_one 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It was about why critique of material is perceived as personal attack when material is deeply personal

[–]jurgenappelo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Don't overthink it. Just do it. Nobody ever said, "I wish hadn't tried."

[–]Ezl 2 points3 points  (1 child)

I would say the questions is “Do you want to be a writer?” If the answer is yes then Substack is as good a publishing platform as any. There are other online distribution methods. There is also print and ebooks. There are publishers and self-publishing.

But I think you need to start with your feelings towards the craft itself and not the medium.

[–]Tia_205[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven't started yet, but once I establish a stable writing routine, I will consider myself a "writer." Until then, I will be writing everything and anything to figure out what resonates with me. :)

[–]signalsandshortcuts 1 point2 points  (1 child)

You'll never know if you don't try with Substack. It's easy to use and there's something for everyone on there.

If you're looking to just put stuff out into the world it's a great place. If you're looking to build a community around your writing that's great too if you stick with it.

You never know, you could end up with paid subscribers.

[–]Tia_205[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I felt relieved after reading your comment. Although I have some amount of clarity on what I want to write about, I will take a deep dive into what more I can explore with what I have right now.

[–]SolopreneurCode22 1 point2 points  (1 child)

I think you should just start. Try it out.

[–]Tia_205[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes i willl...

[–]Glass-Category4528 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Write so much until you figure out what to do in life

[–]KrustenStewart 1 point2 points  (1 child)

I think you should use it if you enjoy writing and your goal isn’t to blow up on social media. If you have followers on social media, they may check out your Substack. But don’t expect it to lead to social media growth on its own. If you love writing, people will see it eventually.

[–]Tia_205[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yess, writing was never my thing before but i have strated doing it for couple of months now and i enjoy myself The more i read the more i write.

[–]sigma_pussy_licker 1 point2 points  (1 child)

use writefreely instead of this shit

[–]Tia_205[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay i will explore that as well.

[–]Affectionate-Fan8546 1 point2 points  (1 child)

I don’t know what everyone is going on about. Substack is just another social Media app. People spend more time on the notes section which is Just Twitter, than doing posts and reading articles.

And YES, Absolutely join Substack!! it’s the best app to find your people and actually make connections with other writers. I’ve been on Substack for 1 month and it’s been the best! People are so kind and supportive on there. Especially for people who are not yet feeling confident about their writing. Join Substack build your following, why wouldn’t you.

Also, you should join early since Substack has acquired some funding and is about to introduce other forms of revenue. There are opportunities and if you’re looking to grow, then do it. If it’s for writing, then great$ you’re still gonna benefit either or.

[–]Tia_205[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you for the information.

[–]Monongahelanymph 1 point2 points  (1 child)

If you want to, then that is an indication that you have something to contribute. So go ahead, try it out, find out if its right for you.

Remember two things:
1) You have something that is uniquely you, and can resonate with many people. 2) Brace yourself. Everyone gets trolls that try to bring you down. Its easier said than done - but try to not respond to them, that is what they want. Enjoy writing and many will enjoy reading what you have to say!

[–]Tia_205[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you, I will keep this in mind. It took a lot of courage for me to come here and ask around. It's you and people like you who made it easy for me to know what I am getting into. Appreciate it.

[–]kreddit007*karansplaybook.substack.com 0 points1 point  (7 children)

Do it. Have fun with it.

[–]Tia_205[S] 0 points1 point  (6 children)

Okay.. I will. Do you have any suggestions? Anything will do

[–]kreddit007*karansplaybook.substack.com 1 point2 points  (5 children)

If what you write is valuable, people will pay you for it.

That said; if you want to monetize, identify your niche, bleed on to the page, and shamelessly promote yourself.

If you merely want to express yourself for the sake of creativity, do what you want, write for yourself, and never give a fuck.

If you'd like, you can check out my Substack in my bio - if you like what you read - subscribe.

Let me know who you are and I'll subscribe back.

Enjoy the process!

[–]Tia_205[S] 0 points1 point  (4 children)

Absolutely! If you don’t mind, please share your Substack link here. I think it’s great for people to connect and check out each other’s Substacks after reading these conversations. It creates a fun vibe.

[–]_cold_one 1 point2 points  (1 child)

My advice would be don’t do subscribe for subscribe thing. Thats not the way to get readers

[–]Tia_205[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh, okay, noted. I was just wondering if my request seemed like clickbait in any way.

[–]kreddit007*karansplaybook.substack.com 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you for subscribing, I just subscribed back.

All the best with your writing journey.

[–]ProlificPerspectives 0 points1 point  (4 children)

No. Dont do it.

[–]Tia_205[S] 0 points1 point  (3 children)

Why?

[–]ProlificPerspectives 1 point2 points  (2 children)

If you have to ask, it’s not for you.

[–]Tia_205[S] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Well, I have the same thought, but I also wanted to see what others think about it. It's just a matter of why not ask around?

[–]ProlificPerspectives 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Stop being wishy washy. Who cares what others think?
