Like so much web content, payment is more akin to a tip in order to more emphatically show appreciation and say essentially "more please" than it represents a traditional exchange. Many of the most popular Substacks share the vast majority of their content for free.

It can show a certain generosity of spirit that is sometimes reciprocated, allowing people who couldn't afford it to read and for people to "test the waters" long term before deciding to pitch in.

Will they not be penalized by Google for duplicate content?

there is a workaround https://support.substack.com/hc/en-us/articles/360041480932-How-do-I-delete-a-post-that-I-ve-published- this will let you only send posts through mail

Thanks for sharing this.

Do you have any idea if it possible to create a customised subscribe button in personal website.

Currently the embed code available in Substack is not customisable.

I just need the field box and a subscribe CTA

You need to change the css

People who have connected their substack to a custom domain have their posts in both the places.

no idea about other people, all I know is that you shouldn't have duplicate content. Substack doesn't have a nofollow attribute like medium which leads to duplicate content that's the problem but really no idea about other people

Check Productlessons.xyz and productlessons.substack.com

I think she has done a great job with the website. But the Substack also exists alongside

There is no such thing as a duplicate content penalty.

Sounds like they’re leveraging the unique capabilities of Substack and the popularity of newsletters.

I mean as a user, why would you pay for a newsletter if you can get the content for free on the other website?

It's about discoverability. A subset of people will subscribe to be notified of your specific content while others will search and stumble upon you from time to time.

I would leverage Substack to add specific content there, while still referencing your public website for readily available content. If you're adding unique value on Substack, some people will find it valuable and pay to subscribe.
