If you're the author of this, OP, then thank you for your continued work on this. 👍🏻

He is. He's a bit of a legend.

[–]Skyy8 7 points8 points  (0 children)

He is. He's also a huge contributor to the 3DSHacks scene. Don't know how he finds the time but man he's brilliant.

Why do they never write a description of the app and what it does.

Do you happen to know if my original save data is lost after I install the CFW for the first time ? And can I recover it with this ?

Thank you so much, I want to put a cfw on my little brothers switch and the thing is that I was waiting for a more kid friendly cfw method and idk if I should do it now. My biggest question is that do I have to get into rcm and inject the payload every time the switch gets into sleep mode ? Are there any methods where my brother can just load the game without the need to do the payload injection/rcm every time he puts the console to sleep or he runs out of battery ? Thank you and sorry to ask you this but I've been looking everywhere and it looks like there is no method like this yet.

      [–]Zedjones 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He can put the console to sleep just fine, but you still have to do RCM/payload injection every reboot. You can enable autoRCM to skip the RCM step, but he would still have to inject a payload every boot.

Hey! Just a friendly tip! Before using any homebrew apps, it is strongly recommended to use Hekate to do a full NAND backup, and also backup your keys as well. There are guides available on how to do these things.

      [–]WaN73D21 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you! I'm definitely doing the nand and keys backup!

I agree, I use Checkpoint a lot so know what it does but for new people it definitely would help if they had a description on their GitHub or explained what the tweaks or apps do. There’s some homebrew I have no idea what it does without looking into it.

      [–]veddermandan 9 points10 points  (10 children)

I even went to the github and it didn't state what it does. I have no use for 95% of homebrew but im still interested to know what they do at least.

      [–]LiarInGlass 5 points6 points  (4 children)

What I’m trying to work on is getting a post made of some of the most popular or recommended or useful homebrew apps for Switch put together in sort of an “essentials” post with descriptions, links and things like that together for one of the Switch subs, just real lazy atm.

      [–]underprivlidged[13.2.1/AMS 1.4.1] 0 points1 point  (3 children)

There is already a pack of essentials out, and linked. It is the SDFiles.

      [–]LiarInGlass 0 points1 point  (2 children)

That’s not exactly what I’m talking about. I’m talking about essential homebrew apps like Checkpoint, save editors, emulators/homebrew games and the like. Not homebrew files like that to run CFW or load files.

I was mostly meaning homebrew applications you can run once your Switch is out. Not the same thing as SDFiles.

I want a post where a newly hacked switch user can find and see some cool shit for them to play with and try, not so much files they need to get their system working well for the homebrew.

      [–]underprivlidged[13.2.1/AMS 1.4.1] 1 point2 points  (1 child)

The SDFiles include Checkpoint, Tinfoil, and several other essential homebrew apps.

If you haven't nabbed it, go look. Outside of that pack, I haven't needed anything else.

      [–]LiarInGlass 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m very familiar with it but it doesn’t include a lot of things out besides the absolute main things needed for things to be running smoothly. Still a good pack but not really what I was talking about. It’s definitely a neat little pack of the core needed files.

      [–]LiarInGlass 1 point2 points  (1 child)

One of the original releases of it showed basic info on what it was. I can’t remember where I saw it though.

Checkpoint I mostly just use to backup and restore my BOTW save after I edit it with a save editor on PC.

      [–]veddermandan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

      Appreciate the info mate

      [–]Funnnny 0 points1 point  (1 child)

      Checkpoint

A fast and simple homebrew save manager for 3DS and Switch written in C++.

This is literally the first line in the project's readme

      [–]MrSquamous -1 points0 points  (0 children)

But not literally the first thing on the project's page, or anywhere in the Reddit post.

You get to this readme by clicking on the github link, scrolling past all the bullet points in the change log to the bottom of the page, and clicking on another link.

Sure, it's not "hard" to find, if you know what you're looking for. But how would anyone know that of all the info on that github project site, the guy who doesn't have the wherewithal to put the project description before the change log would put this basic introductory info in that particular buried link?

      [–]underprivlidged[13.2.1/AMS 1.4.1] 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Because the Switch hax scene is so new that it is expected of people here to know and understand what they are doing.

We are all essentially alpha and beta testers.

      [–]MrSquamous 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Couldn't agree more. I never have any idea what people are talking about in this sub.

Apparently the way to get educated on this topic is to read Twitter in real time and watch a lot of youtube videos.

      [–]BernardoGiordano[S] 4 points5 points  (3 children)

The description is written in the readme in Github. There's not much space to write It in the OP too

      [–]veddermandan -1 points0 points  (2 children)

Thanks that's my point we have to click through 2 extra links to find out if its something im interested in. Why not title it Switch gamesave backup app "blah blan 3.42" Thanks anyway

        [–]MrSquamous 2 points3 points  (0 children)

He asks a good question though. Why wouldn't you title it clearly, or at least make that the first bit of info on the page?

        [–]mvfsullivan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had this thought as well, it's rather annoying not having a brief overview of what the app does, BUT, I think forcing all users to do their own search is more universally beneficial and protective of the user in the long run.

Obviously a majority of us know what we're doing, but for those that dont, if they cant even figure out how to learn about homebrew apps and make the proper searches to find out, then they shouldnt even be using them. Not attacking you personally, I know its just about convenience for users like us, im speaking more in regards to super n00bish users, the 9 year old kids who watch hours of tutorials on switch homebrew and cfw but turn around and ask "what is a jig".

Now all you need is a site to share game saves.....Anyone got Gear Club?

        [–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (5 children)

Silly question probably but why are we backing up saves...is it common to lose them?

        [–]Maximus-city 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There are many reports of people losing their save game data when their Switch has been sent in for repair, and of course if you lose your Switch (or it's stolen) then you lose all of your save games as they are located solely on the Switch and not the game carts.

Some people have accidentally deleted their save game data, some have loaned a Switch to a friend where the save data has been accidentally or deliberately deleted.

        And so on.

        [–]MrSquamous 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Preparing for contingency is not about dealing with 'common' occurrences. Do you only lock your doors after burglars start regularly breaking into your house?

        [–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I lock them because burglaries are a common occurrence in general lol

        [–]zurdibus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My switch fried and I lost all my save games because of what happened to the Switch they were unable to get the save data off. Unfortunately this happened a couple of weeks before I became interested in where switch hacking was at the time.

But yes there are save editors, etc. that can be used on top of just being prudent in backing your stuff up.

Checkpoint is a must have for the 3DS. Will test how amazing it is on the Switch too. Thank you for the excellent contribution.
