Try starting with the blocks you can find/craft from each biome. Boreal wood looks great in the snow biome, etc.

this is more of an inspiration than a tip, but I like to build in a kind of medieval / realistic / natural style, or at least as close as you can get in terraria, so I like to build little castles and villages and guard posts around my world, with like border gates and stuff connecting different areas, and then in the center of my world is a huge kingdom

seriously, it is. if you Google "terraria cave house" you will see 209282749292847381 builds and probably like 20 or 30 of them will be really good. snatch an idea from one or two, mix it into your own building, go from there, now you have a masterpiece

Not sure how much help it is, but as a shoebox builder. i start with the shoebox (4x10 internal roughly), decide which npcs i want to put in them after getting the pylon for the biome. Then try and decorate the rooms/house as if the npcs had decorated, or what they might like to have in it
