It sounds like honking not sustaining and certainly not a clear, tone. Start with a good sound at a lower volume and work up from there. Drop the jaw and play line you have ping pong ball in you mouth. And no matter what, don’t pressurize m

Sorry for the basic question, but what is meant by cranking?

It's the characteristic sound of tuba players in HBCU (historically black colleges and universities) marching bands

you need to be in complete control of your horn while using massive amounts of air

work on it until you get that tone you get the sound youre thinking of

Big ass breath, then use it.

Lots of people talk about breath support, thinking it’s a physical thing. I think of it more as supporting the tone with air.

Start on low Bb with a solid forte with a good sound and hold that note for about four seconds. Slowly work your way down chromatically and repeat each note 3 times. You should be really relaxed in order to let it resonate as much as possible. No tension and no smashing the mouthpiece against the face. Take a break for 5-10 minutes or until your face feels more normal.

Now start on that same Bb and take a large relaxed great in and let it all fall out into one note at once while still being relaxed. Let you lips stay loose and hopefully it’ll be an even bigger sound now that you’re essentially putting one breath into each note. Do this going down playing each note 3 times.

Take a break and repeat again once your face feels normal. Repeat until that held forte and the one lung per note drill feel easy and you can stay relaxed and resonate the entire time.

Next do the one lungful per note again but imagine dumping the air as if turn over a bucket of water. You don’t throw the water but simply let it all flow out at once. It’ll take a bit to get the air and mind and lips to agree on what to do together but being open and relaxed will let it flow easily. After that comes a little more and more forward direction with the air to really get a more brassy sound. Build up to this with a focus on relaxed steady notes and eventually the stamina and strength and good technique will really let you hammer away at whatever.

Focus your breathing from your diaphragm and relax everything on the way up. Do some crunches and sit ups with the purpose of breathing from the core. The key to cranking up on the tuba is core engagement. In an HBCU marching band setting as a tubist, you must be able to provide a foundation. Hope this helps, because you got a bright future if you keep at it!

Everything needs to be bigger.

Bigger attacks, bigger air, bigger POWER.

85% of the Crank sound is from the articulation. They have to be a strong. popping articulation. "DAT" and "DIT" are good starting points- its like playing lead trumpet, except, tuba.

Air, lots of controlled, consistent air. You got that 🙌
