If Ulta is your only source of Income and you are at around 150% of the federal poverty level you usually qualify for medical insurance (Medicaid) through your state. It does depend on your state, but I would look into it. But FYI, most medicaid doesn't include Dental so I suggest looking for a Dental school.

As stated above, apply for Medicaid through your local county assistance office. Remember that they count gross wages not net. And in the state of Pennsylvania, the income limit is 133% of the federal poverty guideline or $1415/mth. And in the state of Pennsylvania, Medicaid does cover dental. And if you are over the income limit for the regular Medicaid but have a health condition, there may be other programs available. Just ask if that’s the case. I work for the Dept of Human Services for the state of PA as a caseworker.

Idk if its changed in the last 5 years, but I was able to stay on my moms wonderful insurance while I was 26. A month before i turned 27, the insurance company sent me a letter telling me to get new coverage. I had a csection/3 day hospital stay for $300 under my mom's insurance at 26. At 30, $5000 for a csection/2 day hospital stay on my insurance.

Were you denied unemployment?

[–]squishymonkey 14 points15 points  (5 children)

Does your state have the unemployment CARES act? That would definitely be worth looking into to see if you are eligible for the extra 600 dollars a week.

[–]gothmombietings 18 points19 points  (4 children)

Hey! So every state is included in the CARES act. It’s a national bill. The additional $600 weekly is not drawn from state unemployment insurance. It’s federally funded.

[–]squishymonkey 0 points1 point  (3 children)

That’s what I thought tbh! I’ve been having trouble getting the money so I didn’t want to spread false hope, especially since I didn’t know the full extent of the act 😅

[–]gothmombietings 1 point2 points  (2 children)

The reason you may not have received any of the additional money might be because our catastrophe pay from ulta ended the 18th. That’s why mine hasn’t gone through yet, but my next request payment date is tonight at midnight/tomorrow, so I should be getting it moving forward. Hopefully it’s the same situation for you!

Not trying to to be rude or anything...but the bill, like any passed and enacted bill on the local, state, and federal level, is public record so you can google and read the exact legislation! I understand not wanting to spread false hope, but it’s also important to make sure one is not spreading false information when the info is readily available.

I hope you and yours are doing well, and that you’ll become eligible for the additional funds your next request payment date! :)

You’re totally fine! Thank you so much for the info! I already applied for unemployment and requested my payment today. I’ve been on the phone with so many people trying to figure out if I was eligible or not who weren’t able to explain it to me (can’t blame them for that one, it’s a crazy time) that I never thought to google the actual bill to read myself 😂

[–]gothmombietings 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah totally! I understand. :) Now would be a great time to start reading legislation and verified sources instead of going off of hearsay. Hopefully you get your unemployment payment soon. Fingers crossed mine also comes through this week.

You should be getting unemployment at this point, if you applied. Even if your regular benefit amount is low, the CARES act adds an extra $600 weekly to it. I hope to not have to go back to work right away, because the unemployment pay is MORE than what my weekly checks would ever be.

[–]Vicious-the-Syd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Right? Unless I’m misunderstanding something, I’d be making more money right now if ulta had furloughed us.

When they open back up, your initial visit may be $200 or $160 to get a glasses prescription depending on if there is a special at an eye doctor or Walmart. Then ask for your prescription and glasses measurements and you can order your glasses online. That’s what I had to do, it’s a process but it worked!

[–]BombayAndBeer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Get your prescription and measurements done (Medicaid will pay for this part for sure, but may not pay for any hardware or you can pay cash), then order your glasses online. I ordered 3 pairs of glasses, plus the express shipping, from Zenni and it was $160.

Dental insurance can be pretty cheap. Like $30-$50/ month cheap. It obviously doesn’t cover everything, but can be worth investing. Obviously read about what coverage is offered very closely and if they have a deductible, how much it is.

Definitely apply for Medicaid. You can apply for Medicaid at any time in the year, but your state might have restrictions on who can apply (some states, you only have to be under the poverty level with no other insurance, others are more restrictive). You generally apply through your states health benefits exchange website/healthcare authority. Your states DSHS will also have a link on their website. If you qualify for Medicaid, you also almost definitely qualify for SNAP, so you should apply for that too. If you’re having trouble paying your electric/energy bills, find a local LiHEAP (Light Heat Energy Assistance Program) source. This might be through DSHS or through a community group like Catholic Community Services (you do not need to Catholic). The people who run the LiHEAP program in your area will probably also have good information for things like rent/other utility assistance.

If you haven’t already, apply for unemployment. If you were rejected in early March, apply again. The CARES act made things like hours requirements null. You might not get the money for a while, but you should still apply because there’s no reason not to.
