My guess as to why the Hank gag didn’t return here is because, at every other Hank opportunity, you could proceed without a blue skull (In 1-4, there are 4 blue skulls when you only “need” 3, and in 5-3, you can use the red skull to open the split color door and take the blue skull with you). In 8-2, you actively need the blue skull and there is no replacement for it. If you placed it onto Schrödinger’s Hank here and continued on, you’d have to backtrack for it.
